Chapter 7 - The Rescue

The sound of sirens in the distance was the most beautiful thing Liam had ever heard.
It wasn't Gwen who had called them. It was Detective Miller.
The detective had been suspicious of Gwen's sudden, convenient explanations from the very beginning. He had followed Liam's car GPS from Grand Rapids to Petoskey, arriving at the senior facility just as Gwen was trying to slip out the back gate with a suitcase full of cash.
The heavy archive door was pried open by two uniform officers, the cool, fresh winter air rushing into the room like a physical blessing.
"We got them," Miller said, kneeling beside Liam and helping him lift Nora onto a gurney. "Your sister is in custody, Liam. She’s not going anywhere."

As they wheeled Nora out into the cold, starry night, Liam held her hand, his burned fingers wrapped gently around hers.
She looked up at him, the color slowly returning to her cheeks under the oxygen mask. She didn't say anything, but the tight, reassuring squeeze of her hand was all the forgiveness he needed.
