Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction

Six months later, the spring sun was warm and bright over the Grand River in Grand Rapids.

The small apartment was gone. Liam and Nora had purchased a small, historic cottage on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by wild lilac bushes and mature oak trees. The air was clean, free of the shadow of suspicion.

Gwen’s trial had been swift and devastating.

Faced with the financial ledgers Nora had secured, along with Liam’s testimony and the attempted murder charges, Gwen had pleaded guilty to all counts. She was sentenced to twenty-five years in a maximum-security state prison, her reputation and her wealth permanently stripped away.

Miriam, Nora's mother, had been transferred to a beautiful, state-run facility near their new home, funded entirely by the restitution court order from Gwen’s frozen assets.

Liam stood on the back porch of the cottage, watching Nora paint.

She was working on a large canvas, a beautiful, light-filled landscape of the Grand River—not as a place where truths drown, but as a place of endless, flowing life. Her laughter was light and genuine, echoing through the quiet yard.

"Liam!" she called out, waving her paintbrush at him. "Come look at this! I think the light is finally perfect."

He walked down the wooden steps, his heart fuller than it had ever been. He wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.

"It’s beautiful, Nora," he whispered, kissing her cheek. "Just like you."

They had survived the cold. They had defeated the poison that had tried to tear them apart. And in the warm, beautiful light of their new beginning, they had finally, truly, built a real home.
