Chapter 2 - The Shockwave

By Monday morning, the reality of my decision hit the Vance household like a precision airstrike. I was back at Fort Belvoir, focused on logistics reports, when my phone began to detonate with notifications.
First came the texts from my mother, Eleanor. “How dare you disrespect your father? Miranda is in tears. The private school just called saying Ethan and Chloe’s tuition check bounced! You are ruining your niece and nephew's lives over a misunderstanding!”
Then came Miranda, dropping all pretenses of sisterly love. “You selfish btch! Just because you’re a high-and-mighty Army officer doesn’t mean you get to play God with our lives. You’ve always been jealous of me because Mom and Dad love my kids more. Turn the accounts back on, or I’ll make sure the family never speaks to you again!”*
I didn't reply to a single one. Instead, I forwarded the messages to David, who sent back a simple text: “Lawyer confirmed. The house deed is in your name, but they reside there. Eviction notice is drafted if they refuse to cooperate. Stand fast, Major.”
At lunch, my father called again. This time, the arrogance was gone, replaced by a desperate, tight panic.
"Emily, please. Let's talk like adults," he pleaded. "The bank sent an automated alert. The mortgage payment for this house didn't clear. If it's not paid by Friday, we go into default. We don't have that kind of money in our savings."
"Of course you don't," I replied smoothly, leaning back in my office chair. "Because for four years, you took my money and handed your own savings directly to Miranda so she could live a lifestyle she couldn't afford. You gambled on my endless generosity, Dad. You lost."

"We are your parents!" he shouted, losing his temper again. "We raised you!"
"And I paid you back to the tune of $370,000," I replied. "Consider the debt settled. Goodbye, Dad."
