Chapter 6 - Miranda’s Desperate Move

Realizing that our parents could no longer protect her, Miranda took matters into her own hands. She thought she could appeal to my husband, David. She believed that as a man, he might be more easily manipulated by a damsel-in-distress routine.

She showed up at David's architectural firm on Friday afternoon, wearing an oversized sweater and crying theatrically in the lobby. David, forewarned by his receptionist, met her in a private conference room—with his phone openly recording on the table.

"David, please, you have to talk to Emily," Miranda pleaded, reaching across the table to try and touch his hand. David calmly pulled his hand back. "She’s lost her mind. She's destroying our family. My children will be homeless! I know Emily is aggressive because of her military training, but you... you're a reasonable man. Surely you see how cruel this is?"

David looked at her with pure disdain. "Miranda, let me make something entirely clear to you. I love my wife. I respect her career, her strength, and her heart. The only reason she didn't cut you off years ago is because she has a capacity for love that you will never understand."

Miranda’s tears dried up instantly, replaced by a ugly scowl. "She has hundreds of thousands of dollars! Why does she care so much about a stupid mistake? It was just rain!"

"It wasn't just rain. It was the moment you showed us who you really are," David replied, standing up. "You are a parasite, Miranda. You stole Emily’s inheritance, you bled her dry for years, and then you treated her daughter like garbage. The lawsuit stands. And if you ever come to my place of work, or anywhere near my daughter's school again, I will personally file a restraining order that will make your upcoming bankruptcy look like a walk in the park. Get out."
