Chapter 8 - The Terms of Surrender

A week before the scheduled court date, my parents’ attorney contacted ours, begging for a settlement out of court. They knew they had no legal legs to stand on; the altered will and the fraudulent bank transfers were undeniable proof of guilt.

I agreed to meet them one last time, not at Fort Belvoir, but at my lawyer's office. David sat beside me, holding my hand tightly under the table.

My parents and Miranda walked in. They looked ten years older. My father’s shoulders were slumped, his posture broken. Miranda looked stripped of all her arrogance, staring sullenly at the floor.

My lawyer pushed a document across the table. "These are the Major’s terms for settling the matter out of court. Sign, and the civil fraud charges will be dropped."

My father put on his reading glasses, his hands trembling as he read the terms aloud.

"First," he muttered, "the secret trust fund of $150,000 will be immediately liquidated and transferred to a college fund exclusively for Lily Vance."

Miranda gasped, but a sharp look from her own lawyer silenced her.

"Second," my father continued, his voice cracking, "you will sign over all rights to the family home immediately, forfeiting the thirty-day residency period. You will vacate by this Sunday."

"Where are we supposed to go?" my mother wept.

"You have a small pension, Dad," I spoke up, my voice firm and unwavering. "And Miranda can finally get a job. You can rent a modest two-bedroom apartment. You will live within your actual means, just like every other hardworking family."

"And third," my lawyer concluded, "you will sign a formal, legally binding acknowledgment of your financial misconduct regarding the inheritance. If you ever speak ill of Major Vance, her husband, or her daughter to anyone, or attempt to contact Lily, this document becomes public record, and we will immediately file criminal charges for fraud."

My father looked at Miranda, then at my mother. With a heavy, defeated sigh, he picked up the pen and signed his name. One by one, they all signed away their power over my life.
