Chapter 7 - The Crumbling Castle

By the second week of the cutoff, my parents' fabricated reality completely imploded. Without my monthly injection of cash, the cascading dominoes of their debts collapsed.

First, the utilities at their large suburban home were threatened with disconnection. Then, Miranda’s children were officially expelled from the private academy due to non-payment of tuition. Miranda had to enroll them in the local public school—the very same school Lily attended.

The ultimate humiliation came when my father was forced to list his beloved, expensive golf club membership for sale on an online forum just to buy groceries.

One evening, I received a text from an old family friend. “Emily, I don't know what happened between you and your folks, but your dad called me today begging for a loan to cover his medication. Is everything okay?”

I replied simply: “They have $150,000 hidden in a trust fund for Miranda's kids. Tell him to tap into that.”

When the family friend confronted my father with that information, the last shred of my parents' public sympathy vanished. The extended family realized they had been lied to. The calls defending my parents stopped. The aunts and uncles who had yelled at me suddenly went silent, embarrassed that they had defended thieves.

They were entirely alone in the house they couldn't afford, staring down the barrel of a devastating lawsuit.
