Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Treason

By midnight, the mansion was entirely locked down. The heavy iron gates at the perimeter were sealed, the physical security guards reinforced by Ethan’s trusted private contractors. Upstairs in the private medical wing, Elena was stable, hooked up to an IV drip and thermal warming blankets. Downstairs in the subterranean command center—a room Veronica didn't even know existed—Ethan and I sat before a wall of glowing blue monitors.

"She wasn't lying about the cameras, Adrian," Ethan said, tapping his keyboard to bring up a complex schematic of the house’s digital infrastructure. "We intercepted the data packets before the jammer went live. The feeds weren't routing to our local server. They were being bounced through a triple-layered proxy server based in the Cayman Islands, with the final decryption key assigned to an IP address registered to the Vale Corporation’s executive offices in downtown Chicago."

My jaw clenched so tightly the muscles ached. "And the installation? Who authorized the specific hardware upgrades six months ago?"

Ethan pulled up a digital authorization form, sliding the tablet across the stainless-steel desk toward me. "The work order was bypassed through your personal assistant, but the digital signature approval came directly from Veronica’s personal account. She verified the technicians, bypassed the standard background checks, and personally supervised the layout configuration."

I stared at the glowing signature. Veronica. The woman who had comforted me after my public ruin, the woman who had spent three years positioning herself as the perfect corporate wife, was the very virus that had infected my sanctuary.

"She’s Marcus Vale’s inside operative," I murmured, a cold, humorless smile touching my lips. "The merger next month wasn't designed to expand my holding company. It was designed to absorb it completely, using the data harvested from these cameras to expose our private trade secrets, rendering our stock worthless right before the acquisition."

"What do you want to do with her?" Ethan asked, his hand resting instinctively near his sidearm. "She’s still upstairs in the grand salon, demanding to speak with her lawyers."

"Let her demand," I said, standing up and adjusting my cuffs. "She won't call anyone. The jammers are blocking cellular signals, and the landlines are routed through my personal switchboard. She is trapped in the very cage she helped build. I’m going to see Elena. I need to know what she kept copies of."

As I walked up the stone steps of the basement, the pieces of the past five years began to rearrange themselves in my mind. Marcus Vale hadn't just defeated me in the market; he had systematically isolated me, using two different women at two different times to tear my life apart. But Elena had returned from the dead, broken and bleeding, to hand me the weapon to destroy him.
