Chapter 4 - The Mask Drops

I stood up from her bedside, an overwhelming wave of cold fury and protective instinct taking complete control of my mind. "Rest, Elena. You've done enough. I will take care of the rest."

I walked out of the medical suite, down the long, vaulted corridor toward the grand salon where Veronica was pacing like a caged panther. She had poured herself a glass of vintage scotch, her silk gown stained at the hem with the snow she had stamped through earlier.

When I entered, she spun around, her eyes flashing with a sharp, calculated desperation. "Adrian! Thank God. This farce has gone on long enough. My security team is waiting at the outer gates, and they say your men are refusing to let them clear the driveway. You are committing unlawful imprisonment. If my father finds out—"

"Your father is currently being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Veronica," I said smoothly, walking over to the bar and pouring myself a drink. "Or rather, he will be by nine o'clock tomorrow morning."

She froze, the glass dropping from her hand, shattering against the Persian rug. "What did you say?"

"I know about the proxy servers, Veronica," I said, turning to face her, my expression completely deadpan. "I know about the camera installation order you signed six months ago. I know that your upcoming marriage to me wasn't a romance; it was a corporate merger designed by Marcus Vale to absorb my holding company without paying a single cent for it."

The elegant, sophisticated mask she had worn for three years finally cracked, dissolving into a sneer of pure, unadulterated venom. "You think you're so smart, Adrian. You think because you rebuilt your little fortune in silence that you're untouchable. You're a fool. Marcus owns the commissioners. He owns the judges. Even if you have those cameras, it's your word against a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate. You have nothing."

"I have Elena," I said softly. "And more importantly, I have the micro-drive containing Marcus’s private ledger. The offshore accounts, the death payments, the bribery logs. The exact documentation your little syndicate has been torturing my ex-wife for four years to locate."

Veronica stumbled backward, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the absolute totality of her defeat. "Adrian... please... we can negotiate. Marcus doesn't have to know. We can split the assets..."

"Ethan," I called out into my collar mic. The double doors of the salon opened instantly, and two armed security guards stepped inside. "Take Ms. Vance to the guest quarters on the third floor. Remove her phone, her jewelry, and any electronic devices. She will remain under active surveillance until the federal marshals arrive tomorrow morning."
