Chapter 6 - The Counter-Strike

At exactly 5:45 AM, the horizon began to bleed a pale, winter gold over the snow-capped Rockies. The silence of the morning was abruptly shattered by the deep, thunderous roar of multiple high-performance engines tearing up the winding mountain road toward my estate.
Ethan’s voice crackled through my earpiece. "Adrian, we have a convoy approaching the outer gates. Three blacked-out armored SUVs. No license plates. They aren't federal marshals. It’s Vale’s clean-up crew. They must have tracked the final signal ping from Elena’s sub-dermal chip before the doctor deactivated it."
"Activate the perimeter defenses, Ethan," I ordered calmly, standing in the center of the grand foyer, a custom tactical rifle slung over my shoulder. "Do not let them breach the courtyard. The FBI is fifteen minutes out. We just need to hold the line."
Outside, the armored SUVs rammed the heavy iron gates, the metal groaning under the impact. Armed mercenaries dressed in dark tactical gear flooded the snow-covered driveway, their weapons raised as they began to deploy flashbangs and smoke grenades to obscure the security cameras.
But my estate wasn't just a house; it was a fortress I had spent millions reinforcing precisely for an event like this. Hidden automated defense turrets rose from the stone pillars of the terrace, firing high-velocity, non-lethal kinetic rounds that sent the first wave of attackers crashing into the snow.
Inside the command center, Veronica was screaming from her secured room, hearing the gunfire echoing through the reinforced glass. She knew that if Marcus won, she would be rescued—but if he lost, her life as a high-society elite was officially over.
I stood by the reinforced glass doors of the terrace, watching through the smoke as a tall, imposing figure stepped out of the lead SUV. It was Marcus Vale himself. He wasn't a man to leave his clean-up to subordinates when his entire empire was on the line. He wore a heavy wool overcoat, his face contorted in an expression of psychotic desperation.

"Adrian!" Marcus’s voice amplified through a tactical megaphone, echoing off the stone walls. "Give me the woman and the drive, and I will let you keep your life! If you refuse, I will burn this house to the ground with you inside it!"
"You're welcome to try, Marcus!" I muttered to myself, raising my rifle and taking aim through the ballistic glass.
