Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

That evening, Eleanor Vance filed an emergency restraining order against Lorraine. Given her history of legal harassment and her unauthorized appearance at Zia’s school, the court granted a temporary protective order instantly.

Two days later, Travis received a call from his mother’s lawyer, Mr. Sterling. His tone was entirely different now—subdued, exhausted, and devoid of legal bravado.

"Travis," Sterling said over the speakerphone as Travis and I sat in our kitchen. "Your mother has suffered a minor cardiac event. She is in stable condition at St. Jude Hospital. She... she is requesting to see you."

Travis sat motionless, staring at his coffee mug. The silence stretched for so long I thought he hadn't heard.

"Is she in danger?" Travis asked quietly.

"No," Sterling replied. "The doctors say she will make a full physical recovery. But... Travis, she has signed over the remaining assets of her estate to a charitable trust. She has dropped all counter-claims regarding the Michigan property. She just wants to speak to you."

Travis looked at me. I saw the deep, agonizing conflict in his eyes. Lorraine had been a toxic, emotionally abusive force in his life for decades, but she was still the woman who had brought him into the world.

"I'll go," Travis said softly. "But I'm going alone."

An hour later, Travis walked into the quiet, sterile hospital room. Lorraine lay in the elevated bed, hooked up to heart monitors. Without her sharp suits, makeup, and dominating presence, she looked remarkably old.

"You came," Lorraine whispered, her voice weak.

Travis stood at the foot of the bed, his hands resting in his pockets. "I came to tell you this face-to-face, Mom. The restraining order stands. You cannot contact Zia. You cannot contact Maya. And you cannot enter our lives again."

Tears trickled down Lorraine’s wrinkled cheeks, pooling in the lines around her eyes. "I gave you everything, Travis... I built an empire for this family..."

"You built a cage, Mom," Travis corrected gently. "You made everyone pay for your love with obedience. You tried to make a seven-year-old child feel worthless just because she wasn't part of your plan. But Zia showed me what real dignity looks like. She had more courage with that little red box than you’ve had your entire life."

Lorraine sobbed quietly, turning her head away toward the window. "I lost... I lost everything."

"You lost control," Travis said, stepping toward the door. "If you ever want to find peace, stop trying to own people. Goodbye, Mom."
