Chapter 9 - The Official Bond

As the new school year approached, Travis asked to speak with me privately in our backyard one evening while Zia was upstairs doing her homework.
The sunset cast long, violet shadows across the lawn. Travis took my hands, his eyes reflecting the warm glow of the patio lights.
"Maya," he began, his voice filled with a quiet emotion that made my heart flutter. "When I met you and Zia four years ago, my life finally found its purpose. Defending Zia against my mother wasn't just about doing the right thing. It was about protecting the most precious part of my life."
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek folder of legal documents.
"What's this?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"These are formal step-parent adoption papers," Travis said, his eyes searching mine. "I spoke with Zia’s biological father’s estate lawyers last month, and because he relinquished his rights years ago, the path is completely clear. I don't just want to be the man who raised her. I want the world, the law, and every piece of paper on earth to reflect what’s already in my heart. I want to officially adopt Zia as my legal daughter."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, burning hot down my cheeks. I threw my arms around his neck, pulling him tight against me. "Yes... oh God, Travis, yes!"
We went upstairs together to Zia’s bedroom. She was sitting at her small desk, drawing a picture of the lake house.
Travis knelt beside her chair, placing the document softly on the desk. He explained what adoption meant—that it meant he would officially be her father in every legal sense, forever.
Zia listened silently, her big dark eyes processing his words. Then, without saying a word, she opened her desk drawer, pulled out a bright pink crayon, and turned to the last page of the adoption form where the line read: Child’s Consent (if over 7 years old).
In big, proud, wobbly letters, she wrote her name: ZIA VANCE.

She looked up at Travis, a radiant, triumphant smile spreading across her face. "Now no one can ever call me a guest again."
Travis pulled her into a tight embrace, burying his face in her hair, his shoulders shaking with silent, joyful sobs.
