Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Circle

The months that followed brought a profound sense of healing and renewal.

With Lorraine’s shadow lifted from the extended family, the toxic dynamics that had plagued them for years began to wash away. Aunt Karen organized a summer family reunion at a neutral state park, inviting us, Uncle Richard’s family, and all the cousins.

For the first time, Zia wasn't sitting on the sidelines or receiving hand-me-down trinkets.

The cousins—free from their grandmother’s subtle rankings and conditional affection—welcomed Zia warmly into their games of tag and volleyball. Aunt Karen presented Zia with a beautiful hand-knitted sweater, hugging her tightly and whispering, "I'm so sorry it took us so long to be the family you deserved, Zia."

Meanwhile, Travis focused his energy on transforming the Michigan lake house—the very property that had triggered Lorraine’s ultimate downfall.

Over the summer, Travis, Zia, and I spent weeks at the cabin. We sanded down the old wooden deck, repainted the sunroom in bright yellow, and replaced the heavy, suffocating velvet curtains with sheer white drapes that let the golden summer sunlight flood every corner.

One warm July afternoon, Travis took a wooden board, a set of carving tools, and sat on the porch with Zia.

"What are we making, Dad?" Zia asked, leaning against his arm as wood shavings curled onto the deck.

"We’re making a sign for the front gate," Travis smiled, carefully carving neat, deep letters into the oak wood.

Zia watched intently as the letters formed: ZIA’S HAVEN.

Zia’s eyes lit up. "Is this house really mine?"

"It’s in a trust for you, sweetheart," Travis said, setting his tools down and wrapping his arm around her shoulders. "This place will always be a refuge for you. A place where you are loved, chosen, and always home."
