Chapter 2 - The Cold Front

The hospital air was cool, smelling of bleach and efficiency. Ethan was hooked up to an IV, his color returning to a soft, healthy pink. I sat in the plastic chair beside his bed, watching the saline drip, my mind already running simulations of the aftermath.

My phone, retrieved from the locker, was vibrating with a relentless, rhythmic intensity. 42 missed calls. 87 texts. Mark. Caroline. Lawyers. Even my mother-in-law, who usually didn't know I existed.

I didn't open them. I didn't care.

The door opened, and Julian—not my husband, but my commanding officer—walked in. He wasn't in uniform, but he walked like he was. He looked at Ethan, then at me.

"The police are at your house," he said, skipping the pleasantries. "Caroline filed charges. Property damage, trespassing, child endangerment—on your part."

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "She’s gaslighting me. She trapped my son, and she’s trying to frame me."

"I know," Julian said, pulling up a chair. "I’ve already contacted the JAG office. We have a team looking into the security footage from the gate. We also have a digital forensic analyst pulling the geolocation data from your phone to prove you were responding to an emergency."

"I don't want a legal defense, Julian," I said, my voice hardening. "I want them dismantled."

Julian leaned forward. "Rachel, this is suburban Connecticut, not the sandbox. You can’t 'dismantle' these people the way you’re used to. They have resources you don't even understand."

"They have money," I said, looking at Ethan. "But they don't have discipline. They don't have the ability to suffer for a goal. They’re soft. And softness is a tactical disadvantage."

"What are you planning?"

"I’m going to divorce Mark," I said. "And I’m going to make sure that Caroline loses everything that makes her feel powerful. I’m going to start with her 'exclusive' reputation."

I looked at my phone. I finally opened the texts. Mark was threatening me. You’re crazy, Rachel. You’re done. I’m taking him, and you’re going to be institutionalized.

I deleted the thread without responding. I didn't need to fight him. I just needed to outlast him.
