Chapter 7 - The New Perimeter

Life wasn't perfect. I still had nightmares—the flashes of light, the sound of the radio, the static, the silence.
But I had something I had never had before: a home that was my own.
I had returned to school to finish my degree in public policy, wanting to help others who had been in my position—people who felt invisible in their own lives.
Caroline tried one last time to reach me. She sent a letter, handwritten on heavy, cream-colored paper. She asked for a meeting. She said she had "changed."
I used the paper to line the bottom of the birdcage.
