Chapter 9 - The Horizon

The final hearing for Caroline’s case took place on a bright, clear morning. I didn't go. I didn't need to see the end of her empire to know it was gone.

Instead, I took Ethan to the ocean.

The salt air was clean, the sound of the waves a reminder of the infinite, changing nature of the world.

I realized then that the anger I had carried—the white-hot, kinetic rage—was gone. It had been replaced by a deep, resonant peace.
