Chapter 8 - The Quiet Victory

Ethan was three now. He was strong, bright, and kind. He had a curiosity about the world that was infectious.

We had a routine. School, park, dinner, books.

One night, as I was tucking him into bed, he looked at me. "Are you going away again, Mama?"

It was a question he’d asked a thousand times, rooted in the fear that I was like his father—a figure who could just leave.

I sat on the edge of his bed, brushing his hair away from his forehead. "No, Ethan. I’m not going anywhere. I’m here. I’m always going to be here."

He sighed, a deep, contented sound, and closed his eyes.

I sat there for a long time, watching him breathe, feeling the weight of the last few years settle into something manageable. I had won the war, not with violence, but with the quiet, persistent, unyielding strength of someone who had survived worse.
