Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary

The private wing of Saint Jude's Hospital was quiet, illuminated only by the soft green glow of the heart monitors.
My mother slept peacefully under the heavy blankets, an IV drip restoring her hydration, her face pale but calm. The doctors had confirmed that despite her bruises and severe malnutrition, her vital signs were stabilizing.
Sitting in a vinyl armchair beside the bed was Elena. She was still wearing her blue maid's apron, her eyes tired, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
I walked into the room carrying two warm cups of coffee and a bag of pastries from the hospital cafeteria. I set one cup down on the small table beside her.
"Drink some coffee, Elena," I said softly, taking a seat in the chair opposite her.
Elena started, looking up nervously, her hands trembling as she adjusted her apron. "Mr. Vance... I'm so sorry. I tried to protect her every day... but Mrs. Vance threatened to call immigration on my family if I spoke to you. She said you would believe her over a domestic worker."
"You don't need to apologize for anything, Elena," I said, looking at her with profound gratitude. "You saved my mother's life. If you hadn't risked your safety to feed her and record those videos, I might have returned from Asia to a funeral."
Tears trickled down Elena's cheeks as she wiped them away with the back of her apron. "Your mother is a good woman, Mr. Vance. When I first came to work here two years ago, she treated me like a daughter. She bought my son his school books when I couldn't afford them. I couldn't stand by and watch that evil woman destroy her."
"Vanessa thought you were powerless," I said quietly. "She thought her position, her money, and her last name made her invincible. She didn't realize that courage is worth more than all her stolen wealth."
I reached into my suit jacket, pulled out a checkbook, and wrote a check. I tore it out and handed it to her.
Elena looked down at the paper. Her eyes widened in absolute shock. "Mr. Vance... no... this... this is fifty thousand dollars! I can't take this!"
"That is not a reward, Elena," I said firmly, pushing her hands back gently. "That is an advance retainer. As of tonight, you are no longer a domestic maid at Crestview Estates. I am hiring you as my mother's primary private care director and personal assistant, with a full annual salary, health benefits, and complete legal protection."
"Mr. Vance..." Elena sobbed, covering her mouth with her hands.
"My legal team will also handle your legal residency status tomorrow morning," I added, looking over at my sleeping mother. "No one will ever threaten you or your family again. I give you my word."
At seven o'clock the following morning, Julian Vance walked into the hospital room carrying a thick leather briefcase.
"The District Attorney just reviewed the cloud footage, Daniel," Julian announced, his voice tight with dark satisfaction. "They’re charging Vanessa with felony elder abuse, false imprisonment, felony assault, and destruction of medical supplies. Bail has been set at two million dollars."
"Can she pay it?" I asked.

Julian chuckled dryly. "She tried to use her black card at the jail commissary twenty minutes ago. It was declined. She tried to access her primary savings account to wire money to a defense lawyer; the transfer was rejected by the trustee bank. She is currently sitting in a holding cell with a court-appointed public defender."
"Good," I said, standing up and pulling my suit jacket back on. "Keep her there. Now, let's go handle the board of directors."
