Chapter 9 - The Eve of Promise

The night before our wedding, a quiet tranquility settled over our Bainbridge Island estate.

A massive white silk canopy had been erected on the cliffside lawn overlooking the ocean, decorated with thousands of white orchids, pale pink roses, and glittering fairy lights that twinkled like stars against the dark night sky.

In the main house, my mother sat in the living room with Elena's family—her mother, her brother, and her young son, Mateo—sharing food, laughter, and stories in a wonderful blend of English and Spanish.

Mateo, a bright eight-year-old boy with dark, intelligent eyes, ran up to me carrying a small silver box.

"Daniel! Look!" Mateo shouted proudly, holding up the box. "I'm the ring bearer tomorrow! Uncle Julian said I have the most important job in the whole world!"

I knelt down, placing a hand on the boy's shoulder. "He's right, Mateo. You are guarding the most precious thing I will ever own."

"I won't drop them! I promise!" Mateo grinned, hugging me tightly around the neck before running back to play with his grandmother.

My mother walked over, leaning on her cane, looking down at me with soft, tear-filled eyes.

"You look happy, Daniel," she murmured, gently touching my cheek. "Truly happy."

"I am, Mom," I said, standing up and wrapping my arm around her shoulders. "I haven't felt this kind of peace since I was a child."

"When your father passed away, I worried so much about you," she whispered, looking out through the glass doors at the glittering wedding canopy on the lawn. "You carried the weight of the world on your shoulders. You built a giant empire, but you were so alone. And then you married a woman who saw your success as something to exploit."

She squeezed my arm tightly.

"Elena didn't love your empire, Daniel. She didn't even know who you were when she stood between me and that woman's hand. She fought for us when she had nothing. That is a rare, precious gift from God."

"I know, Mom," I said, looking over at Elena, who was laughing warmly as she helped her mother set down a dessert tray. "And I will spend the rest of my life making sure she knows how much she is cherished."
