Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Purge

News of the arrest had hit the financial press at six in the morning.
When my dark limousine pulled up to the glass tower of Valeon Technologies headquarters in downtown Seattle, thirty news vans lined the street. Reporters shouted questions and cameras flashed furiously as my security team escorted me through the front doors.
“DANIEL VANCE! IS IT TRUE YOUR WIFE WAS ARRESTED FOR ELDER ABUSE?!” “WILL YOU STEP DOWN AS CEO OF VALEON?!”
I ignored the cameras, heading straight for the executive elevator to the thirty-sixth floor.
Inside the main boardroom, the air was suffocatingly tense. All twelve members of the board were gathered around the massive oval glass table. Standing at the far end of the room was Richard Sterling—my senior vice president and a long-time ally of Vanessa’s wealthy family.
When I pushed open the heavy wooden doors, Richard slammed his hands onto the table.
"Daniel! This is a total disaster!" Richard shouted, pointing at the wall-mounted television screen running a news ticker of my wife's mugshot. "Our stock dropped seven percent when the London market opened! The press is calling Valeon a house of horrors! We need you to step down temporarily while this scandal blows over!"
I walked calmly to the head of the table, taking my seat without looking at Richard.
"Sit down, Richard," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor.
"I will not sit down!" Richard sneered, looking around at the other board members. "Your personal domestic affairs are destroying this company's valuation! Vanessa's father was one of our founding institutional investors! You can't just throw her in jail and pretend Valeon won't suffer!"
"Vanessa's father pulled his venture capital three years ago, Richard," I said, pulling a tablet from my briefcase. "And you know that because he transferred his remaining three percent equity share to an offshore shell account registered under your wife's name."
Richard froze. The color drained from his red face so fast he looked like a ghost. "What... what are you talking about?"
"For two years, Richard, you have been leaking confidential Valeon R&D reports to Sterling Capital—Vanessa’s father's firm," I said, tapping the screen to display a series of encrypted email logs across the room's primary projector. "You guaranteed them that if you could force my resignation using a public scandal, you would assume the role of interim CEO and sell our core AI patents to them at a ninety percent discount."
The board members gasped, turning their eyes toward Richard in utter shock.
"You... you've been spying on me?!" Richard stammered, stepping back from the table.
"I run a global cybersecurity firm, Richard," I said, leaning back in my chair. "Did you really think I didn't know who was accessing our internal server logs from an unauthorized IP address in Mercer Island?"
I stood up, adjusting my cuffs.
"Director Sterling is officially terminated from his executive position for corporate espionage and breach of fiduciary duty," I announced to the remaining eleven directors. "His shares are frozen under the company's emergency security protocols, and federal agents are waiting in his office downstairs to serve an arrest warrant."
Richard collapsed back into his leather chair, trembling violently, unable to utter another word.
"Now," I said, looking across the room at the quieted directors. "We are releasing the complete, unedited home security footage to the District Attorney's office, along with an official corporate statement condemning elder abuse in all forms. Valeon Technologies will be donating five million dollars to national elder protection foundations by noon today."

"The stock price..." Director Vance—Julian’s cousin—offered cautiously.
"The stock price will bounce back by tomorrow morning," I stated firmly. "Because the market respects clarity, speed, and absolute strength. Meeting adjourned."
