Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Light

The private wing of Saint Jude’s Hospital was locked down under maximum security. Julian had hired a private medical team, completely clearing an entire floor to ensure Clara’s safety.
While doctors performed comprehensive scans and treated her severe malnutrition and healing fractures, Julian sat in the waiting room with Arthur. On the glass table lay three thick leather binders—the physical evidence of Victoria’s web of deceit.
"It’s worse than we thought, Julian," Arthur said gravely, opening the top folder. "Victoria didn't act alone. She had help from inside your late father's firm, as well as the head of the local police division who buried the original missing person report."
"How did she keep her in the house, Arthur?" Julian’s voice was hollow, his eyes fixed on the door of Clara's room. "How could she be under my roof while I was flying to London, Tokyo, and Paris searching for her?"
"The estate is over thirty thousand square feet, Julian," Arthur explained softly. "Victoria utilized the old prohibition-era servant tunnels under the West Wing—areas closed off during the renovations four years ago. She altered the security feeds. Whenever you were home, Clara was locked in the subterranean sub-basement. When you left on your search trips, Victoria brought Clara up to work as lower staff, keeping her heavily medicated with experimental sedatives supplied by a corrupt physician."
Julian’s fist slammed onto the table, shattering the glass top into a spiderweb pattern. "I want every single person involved destroyed. Not just arrested—ruined."
Inside the room, the door clicked open. Dr. Elena Vance (no relation), the lead neurologist, stepped out with a somber expression.
"How is she?" Julian asked, springing to his feet instantly.
"Physically, she is severely malnourished, suffering from chronic anemia and multiple improperly healed micro-fractures in her wrists," Dr. Elena reported. "Psychologically... she is severely traumatized. She suffers from profound dissociation and selective mutism caused by long-term chemical suppression."
"Can she recover?"
"With time, absolute safety, and patience—yes," Elena said gently. "But Mr. Vance, the trauma runs deep. She spent four years believing you had abandoned her. Victoria fed her a daily narrative that you knew she was down there, that you approved of her punishment because she failed to give you an heir."
Julian stumbled back as if struck by a physical blow. The psychological cruelty was far more monstrous than the physical chains. Victoria hadn't just imprisoned Clara; she had tried to erase her identity and poison her love for him.
He walked quietly into Clara’s room. The room was bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight. Clara was sitting up in bed, staring out the window at the distant city lights. She looked small, fragile, almost ghostly in the white hospital gown.
"Clara?" he called softly.
She turned her head slowly. The terror in her eyes was gone, replaced by a profound, agonizing confusion.
"Did you..." Clara’s voice was raspy, dry from years of disuse. "Did you... know?"
May you like
Julian dropped to his knees beside her bed, burying his face in the mattress, weeping openly. "Never. God help me, Clara, never. I would have torn the world apart stone by stone if I had known. I love you more than life itself."
Clara stared down at his shaking shoulders. Slowly, hesitatingly, her scarred fingers reached out and touched his hair, feeling the truth in his desperate sorrow.
