Chapter 3 - The Depths of Deception

Two weeks passed. Clara was moved to Julian’s private seaside estate in Maine—a place Victoria had never set foot in. Surrounded by pine trees and the roaring Atlantic Ocean, it was a sanctuary protected by elite private security.

However, the legal war was just beginning. Victoria Sterling’s family was one of the oldest and most influential political dynasties in the state. Despite her arrest, her father, Senator Richard Sterling, activated every political favor he had to post her massive bail and launch a smear campaign against Julian and Clara.

Sitting in his study in Maine, Julian listened to a news broadcast on his monitor:

"...Lawyers for Victoria Sterling claim that Clara Vance was suffering from severe early-onset psychosis and had voluntarily secluded herself within the estate, alleging that Julian Vance was an abusive husband attempting to frame Ms. Sterling to cover up his own financial mismanagement..."

Julian snapped the TV off. His phone rang; it was Detective Miller, one of the few honest investigators remaining on the city force.

"Julian, we found something in Victoria’s private safe house," Miller said, his voice tense. "You need to see this. I’m sending the digital files over encrypted email now."

Julian opened the file. It contained medical records, audio logs, and hidden camera footage recorded over four years.

As Julian played the first audio file, Victoria’s cold, mocking voice filled the room:

"...Look at you, Clara. Kneeling in the dirt. Julian doesn't miss you. Right now, he's at a gala in Geneva with me. He signed over your power of attorney yesterday. He thinks you ran away with your ex-boyfriend. He hates you..."

Then came Clara’s soft, weeping voice: "Julian... will come for me... he promised..."

"He’s never coming back for you, darling. You’re just the help now."

Julian’s heart twisted in absolute agony. But as he continued scrolling through the files, he stumbled upon a revelation that changed everything. A set of forged legal documents dated four years ago—just three days before Clara vanished.

It was an illegal wire transfer transferring forty percent of Clara’s family trust—an immense shipping fortune she had inherited—into a shell company controlled by Victoria and Senator Richard Sterling.

Clara hadn't just been targeted out of jealousy or obsession with Julian. It had been a cold, calculated corporate execution. Victoria had kidnapped Clara to prevent her from discovering the embezzlement, using her imprisonment to systematically siphon off her fortune while attempting to position herself as Julian’s supportive second wife to claim the Vance family empire as well.

The door to the study opened softly. Clara stood in the doorway, wearing an oversized sweater of Julian’s. She looked healthier, though still pale.

"Julian?" she spoke, her voice stronger than before.

He quickly closed the laptop, turning to her with a gentle smile. "Hey, sweetheart. You should be resting."

"I heard the recording," she said quietly, stepping into the room.

Julian froze. "Clara... you don't need to listen to those..."

"I remember now," Clara said, walking toward his desk. Her eyes were no longer those of a frightened victim; a cold, sharp fire was beginning to ignite within them. "I remember the night she took me. I was going to tell you about the discrepancies in the Sterling audit. She intercepted me in the garage."

She stopped beside his chair and placed her hand over his.

"She took four years of my life, Julian," Clara whispered, looking him dead in the eye. "She made me scrape the floors of my own home. Do not just put her in prison. Destroy them all."
