Chapter 5 - Unearthing the Past

With Victoria and her father locked in federal custody awaiting trial, the immediate physical threat was eliminated. However, the emotional wreckage left in the wake of the tragedy proved to be a far more complex battlefield.

Julian moved Clara back to their primary estate—the place of her imprisonment—not out of cruelty, but because Clara insisted on it.

"I won't let her turn my home into a monument of my suffering," Clara declared firmly as they stood in the grand foyer where the tea tray had dropped weeks ago. "We reclaim it, or she still wins."

Together, they oversaw a complete renovation of the estate. The hidden passages and subterranean rooms were demolished, replaced by a sunlit indoor conservatory and art gallery.

However, during the demolition of the West Wing wall, workers discovered a concealed safe embedded deep within the old foundation—a safe that belonged to Julian’s late father, Marcus Vance.

Julian and Clara stood in the dusty room as the locksmith finally cracked the combination. Inside lay a single, leather-bound journal and a set of sealed letters.

Julian opened his father’s journal to the last entry, dated just days before Marcus Vance's tragic car accident six years ago. As he read, the final, horrifying piece of the puzzle fell into place.

"Julian... look at this," Clara whispered, reading over his shoulder.

The journal revealed that Marcus Vance had discovered that the Sterling family had been running a massive fraudulent Ponzi scheme for decades, using the Vance family’s corporate prestige to cover their tracks. When Marcus threatened to expose them, the Sterlings sabotaged his vehicle, causing the crash that killed him.

Victoria’s obsession with Julian had never been about love or status alone—it was a calculated maneuver to merge the Vance and Sterling assets, hiding their massive financial crimes under Julian’s corporate umbrella forever. Clara had stumbled upon the financial paper trail four years ago, forcing Victoria to act quickly to kidnap her before she could tell Julian the truth about his father's murder.

Julian fell into a chair, his face buried in his hands. The weight of the revelation was crushing. His entire life—his father's death, his wife's disappearance, his four years of hell—had been part of a cold, generational war waged by a family of sociopaths.

Clara knelt beside him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "Julian... look at me."

He raised his eyes, filled with tears and guilt. "I brought them into our lives, Clara. My father's legacy... it almost killed you."

"No," Clara said fiercely, pressing her forehead against his. "They did this. Not you. You searched for me every single day. You brought me out of the dark. We are going to finish this—together."
