Chapter 4 - The Legal Siege

The preliminary hearing at the Federal District Court was a circus of media and high-society elites. Photographers lined the marble steps as black SUVs pulled up to the courthouse.
Victoria Sterling arrived first, dressed in a sleek charcoal suit, flanked by a team of six high-priced defense attorneys. Her father, Senator Sterling, walked beside her, radiating arrogance. They assumed that without Clara’s coherent testimony—given her medical history of forced drugging—the case would devolve into a "he said, she said" battle that money could easily buy out.
Then Julian’s convoy arrived.
The crowd fell completely silent as the door opened. Julian stepped out, impeccably dressed, and reached back to offer his hand. Clara stepped out beside him. She wore an elegant, tailored navy dress, her hair swept up, revealing her delicate neck and the resolute expression on her face. She walked up the courthouse steps with her head held high, holding Julian’s arm—not for support, but as a united front.
Inside the courtroom, the air was tense.
Victoria’s lead counsel, a ruthless attorney named Harrison Vance (no relation), immediately went on the attack, presenting medical affidavits claiming Clara was an unreliable witness due to chemical instability.
"Your Honor," Harrison argued smugly, "the prosecution’s entire narrative relies on the statements of a woman who has been under heavy psychiatric treatment for years. My client acted out of mercy, providing shelter to a woman who had abandoned her family in a state of mental breakdown!"
Judge Sarah Montgomery looked over her glasses at Arthur Pendelton. "Mr. Pendelton, how do you respond?"
Arthur stood up calmly. "Your Honor, we do not rely solely on Mrs. Vance’s testimony. We rely on physical, digital, and forensic reality."
Arthur pressed a button on his tablet. The courtroom's large displays flickered to life.
"We present Exhibit A: The encrypted server seized from Ms. Sterling’s private residence," Arthur announced. "Containing four years of continuous 4K video surveillance from the subterranean level of the Vance Estate, fully timestamped, showing Ms. Sterling personally locking Mrs. Vance in a six-by-eight cell."
Gasps erupted through the courtroom. Victoria’s face drained of color as video footage filled the screens—showing her standing over a chained Clara, mocking her, and forcing her to sign financial transfers.
"Furthermore," Arthur continued, his voice echoing like thunder, "we present the financial records showing Senator Richard Sterling receiving monthly payouts from these offshore accounts totaling over fifty million dollars."
Senator Sterling gasped, grabbing his chest as federal agents inside the courtroom stepped forward, blocking the exits.
Victoria turned wildly toward her legal team. "Do something! Pay them off! Delete the files!"
"Silence in the court!" Judge Montgomery slammed her gavel, her face dark with fury. "In light of this undeniable evidence, bail for Victoria Sterling is revoked immediately. Senator Richard Sterling, you are under federal arrest for extortion, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit human trafficking."
Federal marshals stepped forward, clicking handcuffs around Victoria’s and her father's wrists. Victoria began to scream, thrashing as she was dragged down the central aisle.

As she passed Julian and Clara, Victoria locked eyes with the woman she had tortured for four years.
Clara didn't flinch. She leaned in slightly and whispered words meant only for Victoria: "Now you know what it feels like to be trapped."
