Chapter 5 - The Silent Witness

The condo building in Clayton was a pristine, twenty-story tower of dark glass and chrome.
Lena and Vance bypassed the front desk guard using their federal credentials and took the elevator to the fourteenth floor. The hallway was silent, lined with plush charcoal carpet and soft recessed lighting.
Apartment 1402 was at the end of the hall.
Lena knocked firmly on the door. "Evelyn Reed? Federal agents. Open the door."
Silence.
Lena knocked again, harder this time. "Evelyn, we have a federal warrant for your arrest regarding notarized document fraud and conspiracy."
From inside the apartment came a sharp, metallic sound—a chair scraping against a hardwood floor, followed by the frantic rustle of papers.
"Vance," Lena warned, her hand instantly dropping to the grip of her sidearm.
Vance didn't hesitate. He kicked the lock mechanism directly beside the brass handle. The heavy oak door burst open with a loud crack, swinging inward.
The apartment was in absolute disarray. Suitcases lay open on the living room sofa, half-packed with designer clothes. Cardboard file boxes were overturned near a marble kitchen island, and a paper shredder was whirring loudly near the window, smoke pouring from its jammed motor.
Standing near the balcony door was Evelyn Reed—a woman in her late thirties, pale, frantic, clutching a thick leather briefcase to her chest.
"Don't shoot!" Evelyn screamed, backing up until her heels hit the glass balcony railing. "I didn't do it! He forced me!"
"Drop the briefcase, Evelyn!" Lena ordered, her gun raised, her voice firm and authoritative. "Step away from the balcony!"
"You don't understand!" Evelyn sobbed, her body shaking violently in the cold wind blowing through the open balcony door. "Daniel... he told me it was just for tax avoidance! He said Maya knew about it! He said she agreed to hide the money so the medical insurance wouldn't take her house!"
"He lied to you, Evelyn," Lena said, taking one slow, deliberate step toward her. "Just like he lied to Maya. Maya didn't sign that paper. You forged her signature using a high-resolution stylus plate in Daniel’s office."
Evelyn collapsed onto her knees on the rug, letting the leather briefcase slide from her grip. She covered her face with her hands, weeping uncontrollably.
"He threatened my daughter," Evelyn choked out between sobs. "He told me if I ever told anyone about the notary stamp, he’d have my brother’s business shut down and report me to the state licensing board for embezzlement! I had no choice!"
Lena stepped forward and gently kicked the briefcase away from Evelyn’s reach. Vance knelt down and snapped handcuffs onto Evelyn’s wrists.
"You had a choice to tell the truth," Lena said softly, looking down at the broken woman. "Maya didn't get a choice. She died in an ICU bed while Daniel was buying champagne with the money you helped him steal."
Evelyn looked up, her face streaked with tears and running makeup. "There’s... there’s a hard drive in the briefcase," she whispered. "Audio files. Daniel recorded every conversation he had in his private office. He kept them as insurance against his business partners. Including the night he mixed the chemical into Maya’s prenatal drink."

Lena’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked down at the black leather briefcase lying on the floor.
Inside that bag lay the final, indisputable proof of her sister’s murder.
