Chapter 9 - The Foundation

Spring arrived in St. Louis six months after the trial ended. The cold, grey winter rain gave way to bright green trees, warm sunlight, and blooming tulip gardens throughout the city parks.
With the legal proceedings complete and Daniel Voss’s assets fully seized by the federal government under civil asset forfeiture, the court ordered the full four point two million dollars from the trust fund—along with Daniel’s liquidated real estate portfolio—to be returned to Maya’s surviving estate.
Lena and her parents did not keep a single dollar for themselves.
Instead, they established the Maya & Lily Brooks Memorial Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing high-level financial fraud investigation support, legal representation, and emergency medical protection for vulnerable pregnant women facing domestic abuse and coercion.
On a bright Saturday morning, the foundation opened its central headquarters in a beautifully restored brick building near Forest Park.
Dozens of supporters, federal investigators, doctors, and legal aid attorneys gathered in the sunlight outside the entrance. Agent Marcus Vance stood near the podium, clapping as Lena walked up to the microphone.
Lena wore a simple white linen suit. Her face was serene, filled with a deep, quiet peace that had been absent for nearly a year.
"My sister Maya was a woman who believed in gentle things," Lena spoke into the microphone, her voice carrying clearly across the warm morning air. "She believed that love meant protection, that kindness was a strength, and that every child deserved to enter a world built on safety and truth."
She looked out at her mother and father, who were holding hands in the front row, smiling through tears of joy.
"When Maya died, a coward thought he could erase her name and hide his crimes behind money and lies," Lena continued. "He forgot that truth is not a quiet thing. Truth is a fire that burns away every lie until only justice remains."
She gestured toward the brass ribbon hanging across the double oak doors of the building.

"This foundation will ensure that no woman ever has to fight alone, no lie goes unchallenged, and no mother’s voice is ever silenced again."
Lena picked up a pair of golden ceremonial scissors, cutting the bright pink ribbon tied across the doors. The crowd erupted into warm, joyful applause as the doors swung open, inviting dozens of families into the bright, light-filled sanctuary inside.
