Chapter 6 - The Digital Confession

In the technical analysis lab at the Federal Bureau headquarters, the room was dark except for the blue glow of four massive computer monitors.

A senior audio forensic specialist named Dr. Aris sat at the main console, wearing heavy studio headphones. Lena stood directly behind his chair, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, her jaw set so hard her muscles ached. Agent Vance sat nearby, taking notes on a legal pad.

"I’ve isolated the audio track from file LOG_1024.wav," Dr. Aris explained, pointing to a complex waveform displayed on the main screen. "The timestamp is October 14th, 10:42 PM—four days before Maya’s emergency admission to the hospital."

"Play it," Lena commanded softly.

Dr. Aris clicked a key on his board. High-definition speakers mounted on the wall hummed to life.

The background audio contained the soft, unmistakable sound of rain tapping against a windowpane, accompanied by a low jazz record playing in the distance.

Then came Maya’s voice.

Hearing her sister’s voice echoed through the cold room made Lena’s eyes sting with sudden, fierce tears. It was soft, tired, but filled with a gentle warmth.

"Daniel, honey? Did you put the vitamins in my tea again? It tastes bitter tonight."

Then came Daniel’s smooth, reassuring response:

"It’s just the new iron supplement the doctor prescribed, sweetie. Drink it all down. You need to stay strong for the baby."

"I feel so dizzy, Daniel... my head is spinning. Can you hold my hand?"

"Just lie back, Maya. Close your eyes. Everything is taken care of."

The recording continued for another three minutes—the sound of Maya’s breathing becoming slow, shallow, and labored, while the quiet clink of a glass being placed on a nightstand echoed through the speakers. Then came the sound of Daniel’s footsteps walking away, followed by the soft click of a bedroom door locking from the outside.

Silence filled the technical lab.

Dr. Aris pulled off his headphones, looking down at his desk, unable to meet Lena’s eyes. Vance closed his legal pad with a heavy, solemn thump.

Lena stood motionless in the dark room. The grief that had been locked inside her chest since the funeral transformed completely, turning into a diamond-hard, unyielding weapon.

"Is the digital signature intact?" Vance asked quietly.

"100 percent," Dr. Aris confirmed. "Unedited, continuous recording extracted directly from Daniel Voss’s encrypted local storage device. The metadata places the recording device inside the master bedroom of the Voss residence."

Lena turned around and looked at Vance.

"We don't just have him for fraud," Lena said, her voice dropping into a register of total, absolute finality. "We have him for premeditated capital murder. The state prosecutor can seek the death penalty."

"Pendelton will try to suppress the recording based on wiretap laws," Vance warned.

"Daniel recorded it himself on his own private device," Lena countered instantly. "Under federal precedent United States v. Miller, recordings created by a defendant for personal record-keeping are fully admissible under party-opponent admissions. Pendelton can argue all he wants. Daniel wrote his own death warrant."

She turned and walked out of the lab, her steps echoing down the long, lit corridor. She was going back to the holding facility. She wanted to see Daniel’s face when he realized he had recorded his own crime.
