Chapter 8 - The Legal Bond

A month after the storm, Vincent called Grandma Rose and me into his study. The room was warm, filled with the scent of old paper and leather.

Vincent rubbed the back of his neck, appearing almost nervous—a sight I had never seen before.
"I’ve spent weeks working with family court judges and top attorneys," Vincent began slowly. "Rose, your health is improving, but you deserve peace without financial terror. And Lily... Eli... you both deserve a permanent home."
He slid the papers across the desk.
"These are official adoption and legal guardianship papers," Vincent said. "I want to legally adopt Lily and Eli as my children, and name you, Rose, as a permanent matriarch of this family. Everything I own—my assets, my estates, my legitimate businesses—will be placed in a trust for them."
Tears sprang to my eyes. "You... you want to be our dad?"
Vincent knelt down in front of my chair, taking my small, cold hands in his large, warm ones.
May you like
"If you'll have me, Lily. I can't undo the hard life you had before, but I promise to protect you for the rest of mine."
I threw my arms around his neck, weeping softly. "Yes! Yes, Dad!"
