Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Hallway

By Thursday afternoon, I was discharged from St. Jude Memorial.
Nathan drove us home in the very BMW X5 that my father had tried to hand away. The interior smelled of new leather and fresh air. Clara slept soundly in her rear-facing car seat, completely oblivious to the war exploding around her family.
Our home—a modern, gated waterfront house in Coconut Grove that Nathan and I had bought with our combined incomes—felt like a sanctuary compared to the viper’s nest of my parents' world.
As Nathan carried Clara’s car seat into the nursery, the front doorbell chimed.
Marcus, our head of personal security whom Nathan had hired the night of the engagement party, checked the monitor on the wall.
"Mrs. Vance," Marcus said calmly. "It’s your mother. She’s alone at the front gate."
I looked out the window. My mother, Margaret, stood by the iron gates in a beige cardigan, clutching her designer handbag against her stomach. She looked smaller, frail, and utterly exhausted.
"Let her in, Marcus," I said softly, settling onto the living room sofa. "But stay nearby."
A minute later, the front door opened, and my mother walked in. She stopped at the edge of the foyer, looking around the bright, sunlit room as if she were stepping onto enemy territory.
"Emily..." she breathed, her voice raspy. "Where is the baby?"
"She’s sleeping upstairs with Nathan," I replied coldly, not standing up to greet her. "Why are you here, Mom?"
Margaret took a few hesitant steps closer, pulling a crumpled paper napkin from her purse and dabbing her eyes. "Emily, you have to talk to your father. He hasn't slept in three days. Those lawyers... those police officers... they’ve frozen his firm’s corporate accounts. He can't even pay the caterers for Kyle's gala on Saturday!"
"Good," I said flatly. "He shouldn't be paying caterers with stolen money."
Margaret’s face hardened, the fragile motherly act evaporating in an instant. "Stolen?! How can you use that word about your father?! Everything he did, he did for this family! He raised you! He paid for your private schools, your trips to Europe, your clothes!"
"He paid for those things with my grandmother’s money, Mom," I shouted, standing up despite the sharp ache in my healing belly. "He stole four point two million dollars from me! He forged my name!"
"It was a family fund!" Margaret screamed back, her face turning blotchy red. "Your grandmother meant for that money to support the entire Hayes family—not just you! You married a wealthy man, Emily! Nathan has millions! Why do you need to destroy your brother’s future over money you don't even need?!"
I stared at her, the final lingering thread of filial love inside my heart snapping cleanly in half.
"So that's it," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. "You knew. You knew he was taking my inheritance all along."
Margaret shifted her eyes away, looking down at the hardwood floor. "We... we were going to put it back. Once Kyle married Amber, Richard Cole was going to invest ten million into your father’s firm. We were going to replace every dollar before you ever noticed!"
"You sacrificed me for Kyle," I said, tears of absolute clarity falling down my cheeks. "You let Dad steal from me, you let him humiliate me at that party, and you gave away my car just to keep Amber happy—because Kyle is the child you actually care about."
"Emily, don't be dramatic—"
"Get out," I said, pointing toward the open front door.
"Emily, please!" Margaret cried out, reaching for my arm. "If you don't unfreeze those accounts by tomorrow, Richard Cole will pull out of the deal! Your father will be ruined! He’ll go to prison!"
Nathan stepped out of the hallway, his posture terrifyingly still, his dark eyes locked on my mother.
"You have ten seconds to walk out of my house, Margaret," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, guttural growl. "Before I have Marcus throw you off the property."
Margaret looked at Nathan, then looked at me, realizing that no amount of tears or guilt-tripping would ever work again.
"You're a selfish, wicked girl," Margaret spat, her face twisted in ugly malice as she backed toward the door. "You destroyed this family. If your father goes to jail, his blood is on your hands!"
May you like
She slammed the heavy oak door shut behind her.
I fell back onto the sofa, shaking violently, as Nathan wrapped his arms around me, kissing my forehead while our newborn daughter cried softly from the room above.
