Chapter 5 - The Gala at the Ritz

Saturday evening arrived with a heavy, electric tension hanging over the city of Miami.
The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton in Key Biscayne was transformed into a sea of white orchids, crystal chandeliers, and ice sculptures carved in the shapes of intertwined rings. Over two hundred members of Miami’s high society—politicians, real estate moguls, and corporate lawyers—filled the room, sipping vintage champagne and eating caviar off silver trays.
At the center of the head table sat my brother Kyle and his fiancée, Amber.
Amber was wearing a thirty-thousand-dollar silk gown, showing off a five-carat diamond ring that my father had bought using funds drawn from my trust account two weeks prior. Beside them, my father, Robert, stood in a bespoke tuxedo, laughing loudly with a tall, silver-haired man—Richard Cole, the billionaire logistics tycoon.
"Everything is locked into place, Robert," Richard Cole said, raising his whiskey glass. "My legal team reviewed the merger agreement. Once we sign the paperwork tonight, Cole Logistics will transfer twelve million dollars into your wealth management fund."
Robert beamed, raising his glass in return, though a thin bead of cold sweat rolled down the back of his neck beneath his collar. "To family, Richard. To a glorious future."
From the back entrance of the ballroom, two figures stepped into the shadows behind the towering orchid displays.
Nathan stood tall in a midnight-blue tuxedo, holding my hand firmly. Beside him, I wore a floor-length emerald green velvet dress that elegantly draped over my postpartum frame. My hair was swept up in a sleek bun, my grandmother’s vintage diamond necklace resting against my collarbone.
Behind us stood Sarah Vance, accompanied by three plainclothes federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission and two uniformed Miami-Dade police officers.
"Are you ready for this, Emily?" Sarah whispered, adjusting her glasses. "Once we step onto that stage, there is no going back. The federal freeze order will be executed publicly."
I looked through the crowd at my father, who was currently tapping his spoon against his champagne glass to command the room's attention. I thought of the years I had spent feeling inadequate, the years he had made me feel like a burden, and the moment he handed my car key fob to Amber while I was doubled over in labor pain.
"I've been ready for four years, Sarah," I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. "Let's finish it."
My father’s voice echoed over the microphone, filling the grand ballroom:
"Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed guests, friends," Robert announced, his voice booming with performative warmth. "Tonight, we celebrate the union of my son, Kyle, to the beautiful Amber Cole. But more than that, tonight we celebrate the union of two great families—the Hayes family and the Cole family!"
The crowd applauded politely.
"And now," Robert continued, gesturing toward an assistant holding a leather-bound contract on a silver tray, "I invite Richard Cole to join me on stage as we sign the official partnership that will secure our families' legacies for generations to come!"
Richard Cole smiled, stepping up the stairs toward the podium, pen in hand.
"Before you sign that pen, Mr. Cole," a clear, ringing voice cut through the microphone system, "you might want to check the criminal indictment attached to that company."
The entire ballroom fell dead silent.

Every head turned toward the main aisle.
I walked slowly up the center red carpet toward the stage, my heels clicking firmly against the polished marble floor, with Nathan on my right, Sarah on my left, and three federal agents marching right behind us.
