Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

My father’s face transformed from triumphant pride to pure, paralyzed terror in less than two seconds.

The champagne glass in his hand tilted, spilling expensive amber liquid down the front of his custom tuxedo shirt.

"Emily...?" my mother gasped from the front table, knocking over her chair as she stood up. "What are you doing here?! How did you get past security?!"

"Security works for people who actually pay them, Margaret," Nathan said coldly, stepping up onto the stage ramp and flashing a federal access badge provided by the SEC officers.

Kyle jumped up from his seat, his face red with rage. "Are you insane?! Em, get the hell out of here! You're ruining my wedding!"

"This isn't a wedding, Kyle," I said, stepping onto the main stage and stopping right beside the podium. "It’s a crime scene."

Richard Cole froze with the pen hovering two inches above the contract. He looked at me, then looked at the three federal agents who had now surrounded the podium.

"What is the meaning of this?" Richard Cole demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, authoritative baritone. "Who are these people, Robert?"

"Richard, please!" my father stammered, sweat pouring down his forehead as he tried to block the view of the federal badges. "It’s... it’s just a family misunderstanding! My daughter is... she recently gave birth! She's suffering from severe postpartum psychosis!"

A collective gasp rippled through the two hundred wealthy guests in the ballroom.

I turned toward my father, looking him dead in the eye, my voice echoing clearly over the house speakers.

"I am not psychotic, Dad," I said smoothly. "I am simply the rightful owner of the four point two million dollars you embezzled from my grandmother’s trust to pay for this fake gala, that stolen diamond ring on Amber’s finger, and the bankrupt shell company you are trying to sell to Mr. Cole."

Sarah Vance stepped forward, holding a blue-stamped federal injunction in her white-gloved hand. She handed a copy directly to Richard Cole.

"Mr. Cole," Sarah declared, her voice ringing across the silent room. "I am Sarah Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling. I am serving an emergency federal asset seizure order issued by the United States District Court. As of six o'clock this evening, all accounts associated with Hayes & Associates Wealth Management have been frozen under federal racketeering and wire fraud charges."

Richard Cole opened the file. His eyes scanned the bank transfer records, the forged signatures, and the emergency SEC freeze notices.

His face turned as dark as a thundercloud.

He slowly looked up at my father, his eyes filled with absolute, lethal contempt.

"You tried to sell me a bankrupt firm funded by stolen money from your own daughter?" Richard Cole whispered, his voice trembling with fury.

"Richard... listen to me!" Robert begged, reaching out to grab Cole’s arm. "I can explain! The returns are coming! The offshore investments—"

"Touch me," Richard Cole growled, slapping Robert’s hand away with enough force to echo across the room, "and I will personally ensure you rot in a federal pen for the rest of your natural life!"

Cole turned to his daughter, Amber, who was sitting at the head table crying hysterically.

"Amber," Cole barked, gesturing to the door. "Take off that ring. We are leaving."

"Dad, no!" Kyle screamed, grabbing Amber’s hand. "Amber, stay! We love each other!"

Amber looked at Kyle, then looked at the federal agents who were now pulling out steel handcuffs behind my father. She violently snatched her hand out of Kyle’s grip, pulled the five-carat diamond ring off her finger, and threw it directly at Kyle’s face before running down the aisle after her father.

"Amber!" Kyle cried out, dropping to his knees on the flower-covered stage to look for the ring as the crowd began to shout and flee toward the exits.

Lead Federal Agent Miller stepped up behind my father, grabbing his wrists and pulling them behind his back.

CLICK. CLICK.

The steel handcuffs locked around Robert Hayes' wrists right in front of the live news cameras that had been hired to cover the engagement gala.

"Robert Hayes," Agent Miller read, his voice amplification carrying across the chaotic ballroom. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, grand larceny, and money laundering."

My father looked at me as he was turned toward the stairs, his eyes wide, his lips trembling, his grand illusion completely shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

"Emily..." my father wept, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. "Please... I’m your father..."

May you like

I stood beside Nathan, holding his hand tightly, feeling the cool weight of my grandmother’s diamond necklace against my skin.

"My father," I said softly, as the marshals dragged him away, "died the night you gave away my car."
