Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The Voss estate in Bloomfield Hills was less of a house and more of an impenetrable fortress. High stone walls topped with security cameras surrounded ten acres of snow-covered pine trees, and a heavy iron gate slid open silently as our convoy approached.

The main house was a striking combination of modern glass, dark steel, and warm timber. The moment the SUV pulled into the heated underground garage, a full team of nurses and medical staff stepped forward, seamlessly moving Belle’s stretcher onto a private elevator.

Harlan led me through soaring hallways lined with contemporary art and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the frozen grounds. Despite the incredible luxury, the house felt strangely quiet, almost hollow—like a museum waiting for life to return to its halls.

We arrived at a private medical wing on the third floor. Through the glass partition, I saw Belle being placed into a high-tech hospital bed surrounded by monitoring equipment. Dr. Mercer stepped out, pulling off her surgical mask.

"She’s stabilized, Mr. Voss," Dr. Mercer reported, wiping her brow. "Her core temperature is back to normal, and the oxygen therapy has eased her breathing. But her heart function is extremely fragile. Any sudden stress or trauma over the next forty-eight hours could trigger a crisis."

Harlan exhaled a heavy, silent breath. "Thank you, Doctor. Keep me updated every thirty minutes."

"I will," Dr. Mercer nodded, giving me a respectful nod before returning to the room.

Harlan turned to face me. "My housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, has prepared a guest suite for you on the west wing. There are clothes, food, and a warm bath waiting."

"I should really go back to my apartment," I said softly, rubbing my tired eyes. "My landlord... he’s coming at 8:00 a.m. to padlock my door if I don't have the rent."

Harlan raised his eyebrow slightly. He pulled out his phone, typed a quick message, and placed it back into his pocket.

"Your landlord, Mr. Henderson, has already been contacted," Harlan said nonchalantly. "His primary mortgage on the apartment building was purchased by my holding firm twenty minutes ago. Your eviction notice has been canceled, your lease has been extended for five years at zero cost, and your belongings are being transferred here as we speak."

My mouth fell open. "You... you bought my entire apartment building?!"

"It was a minor transaction," Harlan replied calmly, as if he were talking about buying a cup of coffee. "You refused my card. You did not refuse my protection. You are staying here, Rue. Marcus Vane knows you were in that garage. He knows you saw his men. Until I neutralize his organization, you are a target."

Fear spiked through my chest. "A target? But I don't know anything! I just found Belle!"

"In Marcus Vane’s world, witnesses are liabilities," Harlan said, stepping closer until he was standing directly in front of me. The faint scent of his cedar cologne wrapped around my senses. "In my world, anyone who saves my daughter is family. And nobody touches my family."

Before I could process his words, a sharp knock sounded down the corridor. Vance stepped forward, holding a black leather folder.

"Mr. Voss," Vance said grimly. "We found Marcus Vane’s location. He’s holding Julianna at his private docks in Rivertown. He just sent a message."

Harlan’s posture instantly shifted back into the cold, lethal commander. "What does he want?"

"He wants the shipping manifest for Dock 42," Vance revealed quietly. "And he wants the woman who took Belle from the garage."

My breath caught in my throat. "He wants... me?"

May you like

Harlan turned his head slowly, his grey eyes flashing with a terrifying, dark fury that made the room temperature seem to drop by ten degrees.

"Tell Marcus Vane," Harlan whispered, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice, "that if he mentions her name again, I will burn his empire to the ground before sunrise."
