Chapter 6 - The Unspoken Bond

Three weeks passed like a dream inside the warm sanctuary of the Voss estate.
With Marcus Vane behind bars facing federal racketeering charges, the dark shadows that had threatened Harlan’s family finally vanished. Julianna, after receiving medical treatment and realizing the true extent of the danger she had put Belle in, voluntarily surrendered all legal custody rights, signing a full waiver in exchange for a generous rehabilitation setup in California.
Meanwhile, the medical technology from Dock 42 had been successfully delivered to the private hospital wing of the estate. Under the care of Dr. Mercer and her specialized team, Belle underwent a groundbreaking non-invasive procedure to stabilize her heart valve while waiting for a permanent donor heart.
Every morning, I woke up in the sunlit west wing guest suite. I no longer wore my faded server uniform; Mrs. Gable had arranged a wardrobe of soft cashmere sweaters, silk blouses, and elegant trousers for me.
Yet, every afternoon, I sat beside Belle’s bed, reading her favorite fairy tales, drawing colorful pictures of magical castles, and listening to her soft, giggling voice return to life.
"Rue?" Belle asked one afternoon, her small fingers holding a yellow crayon as she colored a drawing of a sunshine.
"Yes, sweetheart?" I asked, sitting beside her on the bed, smoothing her soft brown hair.
"Are you going to leave when my heart gets better?" Belle asked softly, her big dark eyes looking up at me with profound vulnerability.
My chest tightened with a sudden, overwhelming ache. Over the past month, this precious little girl had become the center of my world. The thought of walking away from her—of going back to an empty life—felt like tearing my own heart in two.
Before I could answer, the door of the bedroom opened gently. Harlan walked in, wearing a dark navy suit, having just returned from his corporate headquarters downtown.
He stopped in the doorway, his tall frame filling the entrance, his grey eyes softening as he looked at the two of us sitting on the bed.
"Dad!" Belle cheered, waving her drawing. "Look! Rue helped me draw the princess!"
Harlan walked over, bending down to kiss Belle’s forehead before taking a seat on the edge of the bed beside me. The warmth of his body radiated against my shoulder, sending a familiar, exhilarating shiver through my skin.
"It’s beautiful, Belle," Harlan murmured, looking at the drawing. Then his gaze shifted slowly toward me, his eyes searching my face with deep intensity. "What were you two talking about?"
Belle looked up at her father with absolute innocence. "I asked Rue if she’s going to stay with us forever."
I flushed warm, looking down at my hands. "Belle, I... I'm just a guest here while your father makes sure everything is safe."
Harlan didn't speak immediately. He leaned back slightly, his long arm resting on the headboard behind me, his fingers lightly brushing against the silk fabric of my blouse.
"Rue isn't just a guest, Belle," Harlan said softly, his deep voice carrying a weight that made my breath hitch. "She is the heart of this house now."
My eyes snapped up to meet his. Harlan was looking at me with an intensity that felt entirely undeniable—a look filled with respect, admiration, and a profound, simmering passion that had been growing between us with every passing day.
"Daddy," Belle whispered, a tiny, mischievous smile appearing on her pale face. "Can Rue move into the big room next to yours?"
Harlan let out a low, rich chuckle that sent warmth rushing through my entire body. "We'll see, sweetheart. Now, it’s time for your afternoon rest."
After tucking Belle in under her warm duvet, Harlan and I walked silently out of the bedroom, strolling down the quiet, sunlit corridor toward the private terrace overlooking the snowy gardens.
"She loves you, Rue," Harlan said softly, stopping near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
"I love her too," I confessed, my voice trembling slightly. "She’s incredible, Harlan. She’s so brave."
Harlan turned to face me completely. He stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the rhythmic beat of his heart against my chest.
"And what about her father?" Harlan whispered softly, his grey eyes burning into mine with intoxicating heat. "How does her father make you feel, Rue?"
My heart slammed against my ribs. "Harlan... I'm just a waitress from the east side. You own half the city. We come from two completely different worlds."
Harlan reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping my cheek, his thumb softly tracing the curve of my jawline.
"I don't care about worlds, Rue," Harlan murmured, his voice dropping into a raspy, passionate whisper. "I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who only want my money, my power, or my name. You saved my daughter without knowing who I was. You turned down my black card. You stood beside me against a ruthless enemy without blinking."
May you like
He leaned down, his lips resting barely a breath away from mine.
"You are the only real thing in my entire world, Rue Callaway," Harlan whispered softly. "And I have no intention of ever letting you go."
