Chapter 8 - Through the Storm

The storm raged violently across the Midwest, covering the railway tracks in three feet of dense, powdery snow.
Inside the private ICU wing of the estate, the wind howled outside the reinforced glass windows, rattling the pine trees surrounding the estate.
I sat on the edge of Belle’s hospital bed, holding her small hand in mine, humming her favorite lullaby as the medical staff monitored her resting heart rate.
"Rue?" Belle whispered weakly, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically. "Where is Daddy?"
"Your daddy is on a very special train, sweetheart," I said gently, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "He’s bringing a shiny new gift for your heart. He’s cutting through the snow like a superhero."
Belle smiled faintly, her small fingers squeezing mine. "Daddy is strong. But you’re my guardian angel, Rue."
My eyes filled with warm tears. "We’re a team, baby. You, me, and Daddy."
On the digital wall monitor, a live GPS tracking icon showed Harlan’s private armored train racing across the dark, snowy plains of Indiana.
Over the intercom, Vance’s voice crackled through the radio static: "Estate command, this is Vance aboard Train Alpha. We have secured the donor heart from Chicago Presbyterian. Dr. Aris is maintaining the cold perfusion system. Current speed is ninety-two miles per hour. Estimated arrival at Detroit station in fifty-four minutes!"
Dr. Mercer nodded at me with profound respect. "If they maintain that speed, we will have thirty minutes to spare before the ischemia limit. It’s a miracle, Rue."
"It’s Harlan," I corrected softly, smiling through my tears. "He doesn't allow miracles to fail."
Suddenly, a loud alarm blared from the GPS monitor. The train’s tracking icon froze near the Michigan border.
Dr. Mercer gasped. "What happened?! Did the train stop?!"
I jumped up from the bed, rushing over to the communications console. "Vance! Vance, can you hear me?! What's happening?!"
Radio static hummed through the speakers, followed by Harlan’s sharp, breathless voice: "Rue! A freight derailment blocked the primary rail line two miles ahead in Ypsilanti! The tracks are completely impassable!"
Panic spiked through my chest like an icy knife. "Oh God... Harlan, how far are you from the estate?!"
"Twenty-two miles," Harlan replied, his voice calm despite the roaring wind in the background. "The train cannot move forward. But I have the donor trunk. Dr. Aris and I are taking the snow-tracked transport vehicle."
"In this blizzard?!" Dr. Mercer yelled over my shoulder. "Visibility is zero! The roads are completely unplowed!"
"I don't care if I have to walk through the snow on foot," Harlan’s voice echoed firmly through the radio, steady as granite. "Tell my daughter her heart is coming home!"
The line went dead with a loud burst of static.
I turned around, looking at the digital timer on the wall counting down the remaining cold ischemia time: 42 MINUTES... 41 MINUTES...
May you like
I squeezed my eyes shut, placing my hands over my chest, praying with every fiber of my being for the man I loved more than life itself.
"Come on, Harlan," I whispered into the quiet room. "Come back to us."
