Chapter 7 - The Trial of Love

Spring arrived in Detroit with a gentle thaw, melting the thick ice along the river and filling the estate gardens with vibrant green shoots and blooming white snowdrops.

Life inside the Voss estate had evolved into a beautiful, seamless rhythm. I had officially accepted a position as the Executive Director of the newly established Belle Voss Children’s Heart Foundation—a charitable organization Harlan had created and funded with fifty million dollars, allowing us to provide pediatric heart surgeries for underprivileged children across the country.

I was no longer the broke waitress with an eviction notice in her purse. I was a woman with purpose, passion, and a family I cherished above all else.

Harlan and I had become inseparable. The cold, terrifying tycoon that the city feared was a completely different man behind the closed doors of our private wing—a devoted, protective lover whose gentle touch and fiery passion ignited every corner of my soul.

However, true peace is often tested before it is sealed forever.

It was a bright Tuesday morning when Dr. Mercer rushed into Harlan’s private study, her face pale, holding a digital tablet with urgent medical alerts flashing red.

Harlan and I stood up from his desk instantly.

"What happened, Dr. Mercer?" Harlan asked, his voice tight with sudden tension.

"The national donor registry just flagged a match," Dr. Mercer announced, her breath coming fast. "A perfect pediatric donor heart has just become available at Chicago Presbyterian Hospital. Blood type, tissue match, valve size—it is a one-in-a-million match for Belle!"

I let out a joyous gasp, clapping my hands over my mouth. "Oh my God! A heart!"

Harlan’s grey eyes flashed with intense relief, but Dr. Mercer’s expression remained grim.

"There is a major complication," Dr. Mercer cautioned softly. "A severe blizzard has just hit the Great Lakes region. All commercial and private flights between Detroit and Chicago are grounded for the next twelve hours. The donor heart has a cold ischemia window of only four hours once harvested."

"Four hours?" Harlan repeated, his jaw tightening into iron. "Four hours to get a heart from Chicago to Bloomfield Hills in a snowstorm?"

"It’s mathematically impossible by road," Dr. Mercer said, her voice heavy with heartbreak. "If we cannot transport the heart within that timeframe, the organ will deteriorate, and the opportunity will be lost forever."

I looked at Harlan, seeing the familiar dark resolve rising within his eyes.

"Nothing is impossible," Harlan stated coldly. He pulled out his phone, dialing a priority military clearance number. "Vance! Prepare my private high-speed armored train at the Union Terminal. Clear the private rail lines from Chicago to Detroit immediately!"

I stepped up to Harlan, grabbing his hand. "An armored train?"

"I own the private freight rail corridor between Illinois and Michigan," Harlan explained rapidly, his eyes burning with absolute determination. "My private locomotives are equipped with heavy snowplows and turbine engines. They can cut through a blizzard at ninety miles an hour without stopping for weather."

He looked down at me, holding my hands tightly in his.

"Dr. Mercer and the surgical team will prepare Belle here in the ICU," Harlan commanded softly. "Rue... I need you to stay with Belle. Keep her calm. Keep her heart steady while I go get her life."

I looked into his eyes, seeing the terrifying, beautiful love of a father ready to tear down heaven and earth for his child.

I reached up, pulling his head down, pressing my lips firmly against his in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of hope, strength, and eternal promise.

"Bring her heart home, Harlan," I whispered against his lips. "We’ll be waiting."
