Chapter 2 - The Morning After

The dawn didn't bring the soft warmth of a new day; it brought a sterile, clinical light that exposed the dust motes dancing in the air of our bedroom. Ethan was already awake, pacing by the balcony, his phone pressed to his ear. I watched him through half-lidded eyes, playing the role of the exhausted, unsuspecting wife to the hilt.
"Yes, I understand," I heard him hiss, his voice dripping with frustration. "Just execute the transfer. I don't care about the secondary verification codes—bypass them if you have to."
He hung up, slamming the phone onto the nightstand. When he turned and saw me awake, he switched his expression back to that practiced, patronizing warmth.
"Morning, darling," he said, leaning down to kiss my brow. "I have to head into the city early. Something came up at the firm."
"Is everything okay with the papers?" I asked, rubbing my eyes.
"Everything is fine. Just bureaucracy," he dismissed, grabbing his coat. "I’ll be back by lunch. We can grab something at the club."
I waited until I heard the roar of his sports car pulling away before I erupted into action. I walked into the kitchen, where the staff—all of whom were loyal to my family—were waiting. I didn't need to say a word. Mrs. Gable, our head housekeeper, handed me a sealed envelope.
"Everything is packed, Ms. Claire," she whispered. "The new security team is at the gate. Mr. Ethan’s access codes have been wiped from the system."
I nodded, feeling a surge of adrenaline that was cleaner than any drug. I wasn't just reclaiming my money; I was reclaiming my identity.
By 10:00 AM, I was in Naomi’s office. She sat behind a desk piled with evidence that would turn Ethan’s life into a cautionary tale.
"The bank flagged the attempt," Naomi said, gesturing to her monitor. "The system detected an unauthorized attempt to access the trust using forged credentials. Because of the pre-emptive hold we placed, the transaction failed. Not only that, but the security logs captured the IP address and the physical location of the server he was using to bypass the encryption."
"Is it linked to him?"
"It's linked to a laptop registered to a shell company in the Caymans," she said, her eyes glinting. "And we found the paper trail—or rather, the lack thereof. He’s been siphoning small amounts for months, but this move? This was the grand finale. He was trying to drain the entire principal, which, as you know, is locked in a way that requires a physical biometric scan of the beneficiary."
I felt a cold shiver of satisfaction. "He never could get past my father's logic, could he?"
"Your father was a genius. He knew that if you were ever in love with the wrong man, the money would be your final line of defense."
The phone on Naomi's desk rang. It was an anonymous tip from one of Lily's nurses—a woman who had always disliked the way Ethan treated her.
"Claire," Naomi said, covering the receiver. "It's the hospital. Lily just checked herself out against medical advice. She's heading to your house."

My stomach tightened. Lily. My baby sister. The woman who had birthed my husband’s child while whispering about my own fortune. This wasn't just about money anymore. This was about the rot that had infected my family tree.
"Let her come," I said, standing up. "I want to be there when she realizes the nest is empty."
