Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

I reached the estate just as Lily’s taxi pulled up to the gate. She looked haggard, her hair disheveled, the newborn infant wrapped in a bundle of blankets in her arms. She stumbled out of the car, looking toward the mansion with a desperate, frantic expression.
She didn't see me until I stepped out from the shadows of the porch.
"Claire!" she cried out, her voice cracking. "Thank god. I can't find Ethan. He’s not answering his phone, and the house manager says I’m not allowed inside."
I walked down the steps slowly, my heels clicking against the stone. The security team stood like statues behind me. Lily stopped, her eyes widening as she sensed the shift in the atmosphere.
"What is this?" she whispered, clutching the baby tighter. "Why are the guards stopping me?"
"You're not welcome here, Lily," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a weight that made her shrink back.
"What are you talking about? It's your house! It's our family's home!"
"It's my house," I corrected. "And you and your lover lost your claim the moment you started plotting to steal my life."
Lily’s face went white. "I... I don't know what you mean. Ethan said—"
"Ethan lied to you, just like he lied to me," I interrupted. "He didn't want you, Lily. He wanted the trust. And when he realized he couldn't get it from me, he thought he could use you and your child to force a hand. He was planning to take the money and disappear. Without you."
"That's a lie!" she shrieked, though the way her hands trembled gave her away. "He loves me! He loves our son!"
"He loves his bank account, Lily. Look at the gate."
As if on cue, a police cruiser rolled into the driveway. Ethan was in the backseat, his hands cuffed behind his back, his face a portrait of ruin. He looked toward the house, his eyes locking onto mine. For a second, he looked like the man I had fallen in love with, and then the facade shattered, revealing the desperate, hollow creature beneath.
He didn't look at Lily. He didn't even acknowledge the baby in her arms. He looked only at me, pleading with his eyes for a lifeline I would never throw.
"He's been arrested for fraud, conspiracy, and embezzlement," I said to Lily, who had collapsed onto the gravel path. "He's going away for a long time. And you, Lily? You're going to have to explain to the courts why you were an accessory to his attempts to forge the family trust."
The sound of the baby crying was the only thing that broke the silence. It was a thin, high-pitched wail that echoed across the grounds. Lily stared at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of hatred and absolute, devastating realization.
"You knew," she whispered. "You knew the whole time."

"I knew long before you did," I said. I turned away, not wanting to see the wreck of my sister’s life. "Security, escort them off the property. The child goes to Child Protective Services for a temporary placement. I’m done."
As they were dragged away—Ethan shouting in fury, Lily sobbing into her chest—I finally let out a breath I felt I had been holding for years. But the revenge wasn't finished. This was just the prologue.
