Chapter 7 - The Leaks

We spent the next 48 hours in a safe house in the mountains, fueled by adrenaline and black coffee. We were digitizing every document in the ledger, uploading them to a distributed network that would release the information simultaneously to every major newspaper and news station in the country the moment my 'dead man's switch'—a simple timer on a website—ran out.
"It's done," Naomi said, her eyes bloodshot. "We set it for tomorrow at noon."
"Good," I said, looking at the sunrise. "By the time they realize I’m not dead, they’ll be the ones running for their lives."
I wasn't just sitting there, though. I had one more move.
I reached out to Ethan.
"I know you're in there, Ethan," I said through the prison's legal visitation line.
"Claire?" his voice was hollow. "Claire, please... I’ll tell them everything. I’ll give them the names."
"You already have," I said. "But you need to be specific. Tell them about the storage unit. Tell them about the storage unit and the people who hired you to raid it. If you do, I’ll make sure you’re placed in protective custody away from their reach."
"You're going to use me as bait?"
May you like
"I’m going to use you as a witness," I said. "It's the only way you survive the night."
He went silent. "Do it."
