Chapter 14 - Unholy Alliances

The morning after the attack, Elena didn't cower. Instead, she called an emergency press conference on the steps of Lakewood City Hall.

Dozens of reporters, local news crews, and photojournalists gathered in front of the marble pillars. Elena stood behind a cluster of microphones, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that projected absolute authority. Beside her stood Maya, carrying a stack of thick blue bound folders, and Detective Mendez.

"Good morning," Elena’s voice rang out, clear and unyielding, echoing through the speakers. "Last night, cowardly individuals attempted to burn down my home in an effort to silence an ongoing investigation into financial corruption."

Gasps rippled through the crowd of journalists. Camera flashes went off like a barrage of lightning.

"They failed," Elena continued smoothly. "And today, Vance Impact Analytics is officially filing a class-action lawsuit against Apex Asset Recovery and its principal receiver, Marcus Vance, for RICO violations, grand larceny, and the systematic theft of over forty million dollars intended for former Sterling Global employees and community development trusts."

A reporter from the Regional Business Journal raised his hand frantically. "Ms. Vance! Are you alleging that the bankruptcy receivership itself is compromised?"

"I am not merely alleging it," Elena said, stepping aside as Maya began handing out copies of verified ledger transactions to the press. "I am proving it. The documents you hold in your hands reveal a shadow network of offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands, designed to funnel public restitution funds directly into private bank accounts linked to Victoria Sterling."

The crowd erupted into a flurry of shouted questions. Across town, in a penthouse apartment overlooking the city, Marcus Vance slammed his crystal scotch glass against the marble coffee table, shattering it into a hundred pieces.

Sitting across from him on a white silk sofa was Victoria Sterling. At sixty-two, Victoria still possessed the sharp, hawk-like posture and ice-cold demeanor that had made her a feared figure in elite social circles for decades. She wore a pearl necklace and a dark velvet gown, but her face was pale with fury as she watched Elena on the big-screen television.

"I thought you said you could handle her, Marcus!" Victoria spat, her voice trembling with rage. "She just dragged my name back into the press! The federal prosecutor will be knocking on my door by nightfall!"

"Calm down, Victoria," Marcus snarled, standing up and pacing the length of the room. "The injunction I filed yesterday will freeze her legal standing in state court. She can throw all the press conferences she wants, but without access to the official Sterling master server, she can't prove you signed off on those wire transfers."

"You don't understand who Elena is!" Victoria hissed, standing up to confront him. "She was my daughter-in-law for three years! She doesn't need a master server! She memorizes tax codes for fun! She builds financial maps out of thin air! If she gets anywhere near the digital signatures on those Apex accounts, we are both going to federal prison!"

Marcus’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and his expression darkened even further. "It's Julian," he said.

Victoria sighed sharply. "Put my son on speaker."

Julian’s voice came through the phone, panicked and frantic. "Mom! Marcus! What the hell is happening?! The FBI just froze my personal checking account! I can't even pay my country club dues!"

"Shut up, Julian!" Victoria snapped. "Where are you?"

"I'm at the marina in San Diego," Julian whimpered. "I was getting ready to take the yacht out. Elena’s lawyers served me with a third-party subpoena two hours ago!"

"Listen to me very carefully, Julian," Victoria said coldly. "You stay on that yacht and you do not speak to a single soul. If you leak one word about the Nautilus account, I will personally see to it that you are left without a single penny when this is over. Do you understand me?"

"Mom, she's going to destroy us!" Julian cried out. "She's not the same girl I married! She’s... she’s like a machine!"

"She's a woman who thinks she's untouchable," Victoria said softly, her eyes narrowing into cold slits of hatred. "Marcus, it’s time to call in our contact at the State Banking Commission. We need to shut down Vance Impact Analytics’ operating license before she can file that lawsuit in federal court."
