Chapter 17 - The Mastermind Unmasked

Julian collapsed to his knees, clawing at his neck as if he were already suffocating. "Marcus! No! You promised me I wouldn't be in the room! You said you were just going to arrest her!"
"You're a liability, Julian," Marcus replied coldly over the speaker. "You always have been. Your mother agrees. Goodbye, Elena. Your revolution ends in the dark."
The intercom cut off with a sharp click. High above them near the ceiling, heavy mechanical valves began to hiss as the colorless, odorless halon gas began venting into the enclosed space.
"Elena! We're going to die in here!" Julian panicked, rolling on the floor in terror.
"Shut up, Julian!" Maya yelled, frantically typing on her portable terminal. "Elena, the magnetic locks are tied to the vault's central safety override. If I can't bypass the firewall in three minutes, the gas concentration will reach lethal levels!"
Elena remained completely calm. She stood in the center of the room, looking slowly around the architecture of the space, her brilliant mind working at maximum velocity.
"Maya," Elena said, her voice steady and commanding. "The halon system isn't controlled by the main server. It’s an independent fire protection system required by Lakewood commercial building codes. What do building codes require for manual overrides?"
Maya’s eyes lit up. "A mechanical emergency pull-station located near the secondary ventilation shaft!"
Elena sprinted to the far corner of the server room behind the main rack. Hidden behind a heavy steel access panel, she found a bright red manual lever marked EMERGENCY VENTILATION RELEASE - PULL TO OVERRIDE.
She grabbed the handle with both hands and pulled down with all her strength.
A loud, mechanical screeching sound echoed through the concrete room as heavy iron louvers near the ceiling groaned open, drawing in fresh air from the outside alleyway and venting the halon gas outside. At the same time, the emergency safety protocol triggered the automatic unlock mechanism on all security doors to allow firefighters access.
The heavy steel entrance door clicked open.
"Now, Maya!" Elena shouted. "Grab the drive!"
Maya yanked the data cloner from the terminal, holding up a small glowing blue flash drive containing every byte of Nautilus Ltd.’s fraudulent ledgers. "I've got it! Everything—the wire transfers, the accounts, Marcus’s private encryption keys!"
They ran out of the server room, dragging a weeping, trembling Julian behind them.
As they burst into the night rain in the alleyway, three black SUVs pulled up, blocking both ends of the narrow street. Doors slammed open, and a dozen men in dark suits stepped out, led by Marcus Vance himself. Marcus held a silenced pistol in his hand, his eyes wide with disbelief as he saw Elena standing alive in the rain.
"How... how did you get out of that room?!" Marcus snarled, pointing the gun directly at Elena’s chest.
"You forgot one simple thing, Marcus," Elena said, taking a bold step forward in the pouring rain, her eyes flashing with pure fire. "You built your trap using local building codes. And as an auditor, I know the codes better than the men who wrote them."
"It doesn't matter," Marcus hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You aren't leaving this alley alive. Give me the drive."
Before Marcus could fire, bright high-beam headlights illuminated the alleyway from both directions. The sharp wail of police sirens tore through the night air as half a dozen Lakewood police cruisers and black federal law enforcement vans swarmed the street.
"FBI! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a voice boomed over a bullhorn. "DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!"
Special agents poured out of the vehicles with tactical rifles raised. Detective Mendez stepped out from behind a cruiser, drawing his sidearm.
Marcus froze, his face turning ghostly white as he looked around at the overwhelming show of force.

Elena looked at Marcus with a calm, triumphant smile. "Did you really think I walked in here without alerting the United States Attorney’s office, Marcus? I live-streamed every second of your little speech over Maya’s satellite link directly to a federal grand jury."
Marcus lowered his gun slowly, his hands trembling as federal agents tackled him to the wet asphalt and slammed handcuffs onto his wrists.
