Chapter 16 - The Midnight Raid

The sky over downtown Lakewood was heavy with thick storm clouds as midnight approached. Rain slicked the asphalt streets, reflecting the dim glow of streetlights.
Elena pulled her dark raincoat tight around her as she stood in the shadowed alleyway across from the heavy limestone entrance of the Sterling Vault building. Beside her, Maya held a sleek metal briefcase containing a portable high-speed data cloner and an encrypted drive.
At precisely 11:58 PM, a silver sports car pulled up into the side alley. The driver’s door opened, and Julian stepped out. He looked pale, gaunt, and sweated profusely despite the cool night rain.
Elena stepped out from the shadows. "Julian."
Julian flinched, looking around nervously. "Elena... God, you look... you look incredible," he stammered, taking in her poised, formidable presence. "Look, I must be crazy doing this. If Victoria finds out—"
"Victoria is in her penthouse sleeping," Elena cut in sharply. "Do you have the keycard?"
Julian swallowed hard, pulling a heavy brass key and an encrypted black keycard from his coat pocket. "Yes. The security guards leave the lower basement levels unmanned between midnight and 2:00 AM because the external sensors are connected directly to private security."
"Lead the way," Elena said, gesturing for Maya to follow close behind.
They descended down a steep flight of concrete stairs into the subterranean depths of the building. The air grew cold, damp, and smelled strongly of aged stone and ozone. Julian tapped the black keycard against the reader beside a massive steel door. The light turned from red to green with a heavy pneumatic click.
They stepped into the private server room. Row upon row of black server racks hummed loudly, their blue neon LED lights blinking rhythmically in the gloom. In the center of the room stood a glass terminal desk housing the central control unit for Nautilus Ltd.
"There it is," Maya whispered, quickly stepping forward and opening her briefcase. She plugged the cloner into the primary fiber terminal. "Initiating full drive bypass. This will take about six minutes."
Elena stood near the terminal, monitoring the screen as thousands of lines of financial code flashed across the display. "Look at this," Elena murmured. "It’s not just forty million. They’ve been skimming from four other bankrupt corporate estates over the past five years. Total assets stolen: one hundred and twenty million dollars."
"My God," Maya whispered. "It’s a massive syndicate."
Suddenly, the heavy steel entrance door behind them slammed shut with a deafening metallic thud!
The lights in the room shifted from blue to a flashing, deep amber red. The humming of the servers was suddenly overshadowed by the sound of electronic magnetic locks engaging with heavy thuds around the perimeter.
"What’s happening?!" Julian screamed, rushing to the exit and pounding his fists against the reinforced steel door. "The keycard isn't working! Elena, we're locked in!"
A speaker on the wall crackled to life with static, followed by a slow, mocking laugh.
"Did you really think it would be that easy, Elena?" Marcus Vance’s voice echoed through the metal room, crisp and cold. "Did you really believe Julian had the spine to pull off a betrayal without breaking?"
Elena’s eyes snapped to Julian. The young man shrank back against the wall, tears welling in his eyes, unable to meet her gaze.

"He called you, didn't he?" Elena said quietly, her voice devoid of fear, only filled with cold contempt for her ex-husband.
"He called Victoria thirty seconds after you hung up," Marcus chuckled over the intercom. "He was terrified you were going to ruin him. So we set a simple trap. And you walked right into it, Elena. In approximately ten minutes, the automatic halon fire-suppression gas will deploy in this sealed vault to 'extinguish an electrical emergency.' It will purge all oxygen from the room. And when the police find your bodies tomorrow, it will be ruled a tragic industrial accident during a break-in."
