Chapter 15 - The Infiltration

By mid-week, the war had escalated into a high-stakes digital chess match. Marcus Vance had successfully leveraged his political connections to suspend the business license of Vance Impact Analytics pending an "administrative review."

Elena’s bank accounts were temporary frozen, her building was placed under administrative seal, and her team was barred from entering their own office.

Instead of retreating, Elena moved her entire operation into the sunroom of her Lakewood house. Laptops were plugged into heavy-duty surge protectors, whiteboards covered the floor-to-ceiling windows, and Maya worked tirelessly on encrypted satellite connections.

"They think they've boxed us in," Maya said, handing Elena a mug of black tea. "The State Banking Commission is giving us thirty days to respond to their fake audit inquiry. By then, Marcus will have transferred the remaining thirty million dollars out of the Cayman accounts and dissolved Nautilus Ltd."

Elena stood before a large glass panel covered in red string and printed bank codes. "Marcus is using a local jump server to authorize those Cayman wires. He wouldn't risk making those transfers from his corporate office or his home where federal agents might be watching."

"Where is the jump server?" Maya asked.

Elena pointed a red dry-erase marker at a location on the map. "The Sterling Private Trust Vault in downtown Lakewood. It’s an old, underground high-security storage facility built in the 1920s. Victoria kept all her family’s physical bearer bonds and private servers there. It operates off a closed fiber-optic loop."

"That vault is a fortress, Elena," Maya warned. "Biometric locks, armed guards, concrete walls three feet thick. We can't just walk in with a subpoena—Marcus’s security team will shred the physical hard drives before we reach the basement."

"We aren't going to break in," Elena said with a slow, calculating smile. "We're going to get invited."

That evening, Elena put her plan into motion. She knew that Julian Sterling, despite his mother’s warnings, was a weak man driven by fear and vanity. Using a secure satellite phone, she placed a direct call to Julian’s private line.

Julian picked up on the third ring. "Hello?"

"Hello, Julian," Elena said, her voice smooth, calm, and utterly commanding.

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. "Elena? How... how did you get this number?"

"I'm an auditor, Julian. Finding things people try to hide is what I do," she said softly. "I'm calling to offer you a deal. A way out before your mother and Marcus let you take the fall for forty million dollars in federal wire fraud."

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Julian stammered, though the terror in his voice was palpable. "I have nothing to do with Nautilus Ltd.!"

"Then why is your signature listed as the secondary trustee on the private access agreement for the Sterling Vault?" Elena asked, lying with absolute precision and confidence. "When the FBI raids that vault tomorrow morning, your name will be the only one on the paper log, Julian. Victoria and Marcus set you up as the fall guy. Just like they tried to do to me two years ago."

Silence descended over the phone line. Julian’s heavy breathing was the only sound. Elena knew she had hit her target. Julian had spent his whole life terrified of his mother, but he was even more terrified of going to a federal penitentiary.

"What... what do you want?" Julian whispered hoarsely.

"Meet me at the Sterling Vault at midnight," Elena instructed. "Use your master keycard to open the server room. Let me copy the encrypted transfer logs. In exchange, I will submit an affidavit to the United States Attorney stating that you acted as a cooperative whistleblower under my direction. You walk away clean. Your mother goes to prison."

May you like

"She'll kill me, Elena," Julian sobbed.

"She’s already killing you, Julian," Elena replied coldly. "Midnight. Don't be late."
