Chapter 1 - The Shadow at the Door

The polished brass handle turned with a agonizing click. Hunter’s blood ran colder than the winter air whipping off the Long Island Sound. She froze, her breath trapped behind her ribs, her hands instinctively curling around the fragile weight of baby Leo. She was undoing her maid’s shirt; her chest was exposed, her body trembling with a mixture of raw grief and instinctive maternal drive.
Lorenzo Rossi stood in the threshold.
He didn't look like a grieving father in that moment; he looked like the specter of death himself. Tall, broad-shouldered, draped in a charcoal wool coat over a blood-stained dress shirt from his evening’s brutal negotiations, his dark eyes fixed instantly on Hunter. His hand rested heavy on the custom Sig Sauer holstered beneath his jacket. Two armed guards hovered in the hallway shadows behind him, their posture rigid.
For three agonizing seconds, no one moved. The heart monitor’s erratic chirping filled the silence—a rhythm that was steadily slowing down toward death.
"What," Lorenzo whispered, his voice a low, gravelly raspy edge that promised execution, "are you doing to my son?"
Hunter couldn't speak. Terror choked her throat. A maid caught in the mafia lord's inner sanctuary, unbuttoned, holding the heir to a two-billion-dollar empire. Any other guard would have shot her before she could draw her next breath.
"Answer me," Lorenzo growled, taking a slow, deliberate step into the room. The guards shifted behind him, their suppressed weapons rising. "Put him down."
"Please," Hunter gasped, her voice breaking into a tear-choked sob. "Please, don't... he was dying. I heard him."
"Step away from the crib, girl," Lorenzo commanded, his gaze cutting into her like broken glass.
"Look at him!" Hunter cried, stepping toward Lorenzo instead of pulling back, holding the tiny, pale bundle against her chest. "Look at his mouth! He's rooting! He's starved!"
Lorenzo paused, his eyes dropping from Hunter's terrified face to his son's tiny form. Leo’s little face was pressed against Hunter's skin, his mouth opening instinctively, searching with a desperate, weak energy he hadn't shown in days.
Before Lorenzo could issue the order to drag her out, Hunter lowered Leo to her breast.
The room held its breath.
Leo’s tiny, instinctual latch was instantaneous. A soft, wet sigh escaped the infant’s pale lips. Then came the sound that no pediatrician, no world-renowned specialist, and no amount of Lorenzo Rossi's vast wealth had been able to buy in two whole months: the rhythmic, steady, greedy sound of a starving newborn swallowing life.
Lorenzo’s hand dropped from his firearm. His eyes widened, a rare, unshielded crack appearing in his icy facade.
"He's... he's drinking," the guard in the doorway whispered in sheer disbelief.
"Out," Lorenzo commanded without looking back.
"Boss?"
"Every one of you, out of this floor. Clear the hallway. If anyone speaks a word of what is happening in this room tonight, I will skin them alive. Out."
The door clicked shut, leaving Lorenzo alone with the maid and his feeding son.
Lorenzo walked slowly to the edge of the window seat. He looked down at Hunter. She was weeping silently, her head bowed, one thin hand cradling Leo’s head with a gentle, instinctual grace that no hired nurse had ever shown.

"Who are you?" Lorenzo asked, his voice losing its thunder, replaced by a quiet, dangerous curiosity. "And why do you have milk for my son?"
Hunter looked up, tears streaking through the dust on her cheeks. "My name is Hunter," she whispered. "And three weeks ago... I lost my own."
