Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Mansion

The elimination of Dr. Gallagher sent shockwaves through the Rossi organization, but inside the nursery, a different kind of storm was brewing.
Lorenzo began spending more time on the third floor. He no longer came just at eight o'clock; he would appear late at night, shedding his formidable mafia lord persona to sit beside Hunter in the dim light of the nursery lamps. He watched her gently burp Leo, sing soft lullabies from her childhood in Pennsylvania, and soothe the boy when he had night terrors.
"You sing well," Lorenzo remarked one evening, his deep voice cutting through the soft melody she was humming. He was sitting on the edge of her bed, his tie undone, looking exhausted from his ongoing war with the rival Moretti family.
"My mother used to sing it to me," Hunter said softly, gently placing the sleeping infant into his crib. She adjusted her shirt and walked over to the balcony door, looking out at the foggy night. "She died when I was young. I guess... lullabies were all she left me."
Lorenzo stood up and walked over to stand beside her. The proximity of his tall, powerful body made her heart race in a way that had nothing to do with fear.
"We have more in common than you think, Hunter," he said, staring into the dark ocean. "Loss shapes people. It either destroys you, or it turns you into something capable of surviving anything."
"Which one did it turn you into?" she asked, turning her face to look at his sharp, handsome profile.
"A monster, most would say," Lorenzo replied with a bitter, faint smile. "A man who controls an empire of blood."
"You're not a monster to him," Hunter murmured, glancing back toward the crib. "I see how you look at him, Lorenzo. You love him. You would burn the world down to keep him safe."
Lorenzo moved closer, his dark eyes locking onto hers. He reached out, his thumb gently wiping away a strand of hair that had fallen across her cheek. His touch was surprisingly soft, devoid of the violence he inflicted on the outside world.
"I used to think I was protecting him alone," Lorenzo whispered, his thumb resting gently against her cheekbone. "Now I realize... you are the only reason he is breathing. And perhaps... the only reason this house doesn't feel like a tomb anymore."
Hunter’s breath hitched. For a fleeting second, the space between them shrank, filled with an undeniable, electric charge. The maid and the mafia boss, bound together by grief, milk, and an unspoken desire that frightened them both.

Before either could cross that dangerous line, Marco’s voice cracked through the intercom on the wall.
"Boss, we have a problem at the perimeter. The Morettis just launched a strike team on the southern gate."
