Chapter 9 - The Trial of Hearts

Six months later, the Rossi estate was filled with light and life once again.
The dark, bulletproof nursery had been redecorated into a bright, colorful playroom filled with toys, light-colored wood, and ocean views. Leo, now eight months old, was a picture of perfect health—a chubby, laughing baby with Lorenzo's dark eyes and Hunter's sweet smile. He was crawling everywhere, pulling himself up on furniture, and babbling happily.
Yet, despite their deep love, Hunter struggled with her transition into high society. The upcoming annual Italian-American Gala in Manhattan was to be her public debut as Lorenzo’s fiancée.
Sitting in front of the grand vanity mirror in the master bedroom, dressed in a breathtaking crimson silk gown and draped in diamonds, Hunter felt an overwhelming sense of imposter syndrome.
"I don't belong in this world, Lorenzo," she murmured as he stepped behind her, placing his hands on her bare shoulders. "I was a maid three months ago. These people... the mob bosses, the high society elites... they will look at me and see a peasant."
Lorenzo leaned down, kissing the side of her neck softly. "Let them look," he whispered into her skin. "They will see a woman who has more courage, more strength, and more honor than every mob boss in New York combined."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box. Opening it, he revealed a stunning antique ring—a massive blood-red ruby surrounded by flawless diamonds.
"This belonged to my great-grandmother," Lorenzo said, slipping it onto her left ring finger. "It is worn only by the matriarch of the Rossi family. Sophia never wore it. I saved it for the woman who saved my soul."
Hunter looked at the glistening ring, then up into Lorenzo's fierce, loving eyes in the mirror reflection. The lingering doubts in her heart melted away.

That night at the gala, Hunter walked arm-in-arm with Lorenzo Rossi into the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel. Every eye in New York’s underworld turned toward them. Some whispered, some stared in envy, but as Lorenzo held her close and introduced her as his future wife and the mother of his heir, no one dared to offer anything less than absolute respect.
For the first time in her life, Hunter felt whole.
