Chapter 1 - The Incision of Truth

Mara didn't answer. Instead, she brought her fingers down harder against the child’s throat, her thumb pressing directly over his fragile carotid artery.

"I gave him what he needed," Mara hissed, her sweet, helpless nanny persona vanishing entirely, replaced by a cold, calculating mask of contempt. "A final, quiet peaceful end. And when Dominic finds his dead nephew with your surgical kit in the room, do you think he'll ask questions? A disgraced doctor, bitter over an arranged marriage, taking her revenge on the Vale heir..."

Evelyn didn't hesitate. She didn't argue, nor did she wait for Dominic to complete his drive down the long estate driveway. She lunged forward, her shoulder slamming into Mara with the full weight of her body.

The two women crashed onto the hardwood floor beside the crib. Mara clawed at Evelyn’s face, her manicured nails tearing a thin red line across Evelyn’s cheekbone, but Evelyn ignored the pain. She scrambled to her feet, reached into her pocket, and produced the small, sterile scalpel she had carried from her private medical kit.

Noah was turning dark blue. His chest gave a desperate, silent heave, but no air entered his lungs. The toxic lavender extract—a concentrated neurotoxic alkaloid derived from Aconitum—had induced severe laryngeal edema. His vocal cords had swollen shut. In less than ninety seconds, his brain would suffer irreversible hypoxic damage.

Mara scrambled up from the floor, lunging for Evelyn’s silk dress. "Don't touch him, you crazy bitch!"

Evelyn turned and kicked Mara hard in the chest, sending the maid staggering back against the changing table. Evelyn slammed the nursery door, threw the heavy brass deadbolt into place, and turned back to the baby.

"Noah, look at me," Evelyn whispered, her hands remarkably steady despite the chaotic hammering of her heart.

She laid the infant flat on his back, placing a rolled baby blanket beneath his shoulders to extend his tiny neck. She felt for the anatomical landmarks: the thyroid cartilage, the cricoid ring, the soft, microscopic dip of the cricothyroid membrane.

That was the exact moment Dominic Vale smashed his shoulder through the heavy oak door.

"She’s hurting him!" Mara screamed from the floor, instantly sinking back into her weeping, terrified persona, grabbing Evelyn’s hem. "Mr. Vale, please! She’s going to kill the baby!"

Dominic stood in the shattered doorway, his customSIG Sauer P226 drawn, the black barrel leveled directly at the back of Evelyn’s head.

“Put the blade down,” Dominic commanded, his voice dark, heavy, and lethal.

“He can’t breathe,” Evelyn answered, her fingers adjusting the angle of the scalpel. She felt the slight pulse beneath the swollen tissue.

“I said put it down.”

“If I don’t make an opening now, he will die.”

“Liar!” Mara sobbed, clutching Dominic’s leather shoe. “She’s been jealous of him since the day she arrived!”

Dominic’s finger tightened on the trigger. He had spent his entire life in the shadows of Chicago's underworld, surviving betrayals, ambushes, and corporate warfare. He knew how cold humans could be. He looked at Evelyn’s pale, motionless profile—the woman his family forced upon him—and saw a cold-blooded killer about to slit his dead brother’s child's throat.

"I won't tell you again, Evelyn," Dominic growled, taking a slow step forward, alignment sight centered on her skull. "Step away from the crib or I put a bullet through your spine."

Evelyn didn't step back. She didn't drop the blade.

She looked Dominic dead in the eye through the nursery mirror.

"Then shoot me, Dominic," she said softly, with absolute, terrifying clarity. "But do it after three seconds."

Without waiting for his answer, Evelyn plunged the tip of the scalpel three millimeters into Noah's throat.

Dominic’s heart stopped. His finger twitched on the trigger—

PFFFT.

A sharp, wet hiss of air rushed out of the tiny puncture wound.

Evelyn instantly extracted the metal casing of a ballpoint pen from her apron, inserting the hollow plastic tube directly into the incision.

Noah’s chest expanded violently. A loud, raspy, whistling gasp filled the quiet nursery. The blue tint in his tiny lips instantly faded into a flush of bright, oxygenated pink. The baby began to wail—a loud, piercing, healthy cry that echoed off the high ceilings.

Evelyn exhaled a slow breath, stepping back from the crib, her hands covered in a few tiny specks of blood and plastic.

She didn't run. She didn't reach for a weapon. She turned around slowly, resting her lower back against the crib rail, and looked down at the gun still pointed at her chest.

Dominic stared at the child. Noah was breathing. The hollow plastic pen tube moved steadily up and down with every deep, clear breath the baby took.

"A emergency cricothyroidotomy," Evelyn stated clinically, wiping a smear of blood from her cheek with the back of her sleeve. "His airway was ninety-nine percent obstructed by anaphylactic swelling caused by aconite poisoning. Had I waited another thirty seconds for your permission, Mr. Vale, you would be planning a funeral instead of a wedding."

Dominic’s hand began to shake. The heavy steel pistol felt suddenly impossibly heavy in his grip. He looked from the crying baby, to the hollow pen tube saving his life, and then to the maid cowering at his feet.

Mara’s tear-streaked face had turned completely white. She looked at the breathing baby, then at the scalpel in Evelyn’s hand, and realized her narrative had just shattered into a thousand pieces.

"Dominic..." Mara stuttered, backing away on her hands and knees toward the door. "She... she tricked you! She planted that—"

"Dominic," Evelyn interrupted calmly, reaching into her pocket and tossing a small glass vial and a dark green testing strip onto the carpet at his feet. "Behind the baseboard in guest room four, you will find the rest of the aconite solution. Beneath the sink in the laundry room, you will find the handkerchief soaked in the lavender rinse Mara used on Noah's bedding every morning."

Dominic looked down at the testing strip.

Slowly, deliberately, the mafia boss lowered his gun.
