Chapter 9 - The Proposal of Heart

That evening, the sunset over Lake Michigan turned the sky into a brilliant canvas of purple, gold, and deep crimson.
Dominic drove Evelyn to the high cliffs overlooking the water—the quiet, private point on the outer edges of the Vale estate where his brother had loved to watch the ships enter the harbor.
The wind rustled gently through the trees as they walked along the manicured stone path. Evelyn wore a simple white trench coat over her dress, her dark hair blowing soft strands across her face.
Dominic walked beside her, carrying a small leather box in his pocket.
They stopped at the edge of the stone terrace, looking out over the endless blue expanse of the lake.
"Noah fell asleep ten minutes after we left the estate," Evelyn said softly, leaning her hands against the stone railing. "The pediatric team you hired for the hospital nursery is exceptional, Dominic. He is completely safe."
"I know," Dominic said. He turned to face her, taking her hands in his. "Evelyn... for months, I’ve been thinking about the day I smashed through that nursery door."
Evelyn looked at him, her eyes reflecting the golden light of the setting sun. "The day you pointed a gun at me?"
"The day my life truly began," Dominic corrected, his voice deep and rich with emotion. "I spent my whole life surrounded by people who wanted something from me—loyalty, money, protection, power. I lived in a world where everyone was buying or selling something."
He stepped closer, his warm hands cupping her cheeks gently.
"Then you stood before my weapon, risking your life to save a child who wasn't even your blood," Dominic whispered. "You showed me what true courage looked like. You healed my heart when I thought it was turned to stone."
Dominic dropped down onto one knee on the smooth terrace stone.
He reached into his jacket, pulling out the velvet box—the same Vale emerald-cut diamond ring he had offered her months ago as a business contract.
"When I gave you this ring before," Dominic said, holding it up, his dark eyes shining with absolute, unfiltered love, "it was a peace treaty between two syndicates. It was a trade of power for protection."
He looked up into her eyes.
"Tonight, Evelyn, I am not offering you a contract. I am offering you my heart, my soul, my life, and everything I own. I am asking you to be my wife... not because my family needs you, but because I cannot breathe without you."
Evelyn felt tears overflow her eyes, sparkling like diamonds in the sunset light. Her breath caught in her throat as the weight of his words washed over her, filling every empty, wounded corner of her soul.
She didn't hesitate.

"Yes, Dominic," Evelyn whispered, her voice breaking with overwhelming joy. "Yes! A thousand times yes!"
Dominic stood up, sliding the massive diamond ring onto her finger. He pulled her into his arms, lifting her off her feet as he kissed her deeply under the golden twilight sky. The ocean breeze wrapped around them, carrying away the ghosts of the past, leaving only the warmth of a love forged in the crucible of truth and fire.
