Chapter 7 - The Trial of Shadows

Three months later, the Federal Courthouse in downtown Chicago was the center of national news.
The trial of United States v. Thomas Moretti and Associates had captivated the country. Over six weeks of intense testimony, the dark web of political corruption, medical fraud, and syndicate violence was dragged entirely into the light of day.
Inside the crowded courtroom, Evelyn Hart stood on the witness stand.
Dressed in a immaculate navy blue suit, her posture flawless, she answered the federal prosecutor’s questions with absolute, surgical precision. For four hours, Moretti’s defense attorneys attempted to discredit her, bringing up her revoked medical license, her relationship with Dominic Vale, and her lack of official authority.
Evelyn dismantled every attack with effortless intellect. She presented chemical analysis reports, digital audit trails, and live recorded confessions that left the defense team completely paralyzed.
When she stepped down from the witness stand, the courtroom was dead silent.
In the front row of the gallery sat Dominic, holding baby Noah on his lap. The ten-month-old boy was healthy, chubby-cheeked, and dressed in a tiny grey suit matching his uncle’s.
When Evelyn walked past the wooden divider, Noah babbled happily, reaching his tiny arms out toward her. "Ev... Ev!"
Evelyn’s stoic, professional face instantly softened. She reached down, taking the baby into her arms, pressing a soft kiss against his forehead.
Dominic stood up beside her, wrapping his arm around her waist, pulling her close to his side.
"You were incredible," Dominic whispered into her ear.
"I was thorough," Evelyn corrected with a small smile.
That afternoon, the jury returned after less than two hours of deliberation.
Guilty on all counts.
Senator Thomas Moretti was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Dr. Vance and nine other corrupt hospital administrators were sentenced to twenty years each. Mara Bell, having agreed to a plea deal after testifying against the Senator, was remanded to a high-security federal facility for thirty years.
As the guards led the crying, broken Senator away in chains, Moretti stopped near the prosecution table, glaring at Dominic and Evelyn.
"You think you won, Vale?!" Moretti spat, his voice raspy and broken. "You think you can play hero?! You’re still a mobster! You’ll always be a monster!"

Dominic looked at the ruined politician with cool detachment.
"I never claimed to be a hero, Moretti," Dominic said quietly. "I am a man who protects his family. And you made the fatal mistake of touching them."
