Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Senator

That night, the storm cleared, leaving the city covered in a cool, misty silence.

In the master suite of the Vale mansion, Evelyn stood by the high French doors, looking out over the sprawling dark gardens. She held a glass of iced water, her reflection mirrored faintly in the dark glass.

Behind her, the heavy oak door opened. Dominic stepped inside, having stripped off his suit jacket and tie. His crisp white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the silver chain resting against his chest.

He walked over, stopping beside her at the window, looking out into the night.

"Vincent spoke under interrogation," Dominic said softly. "He confirmed that Senator Moretti himself authorized the hit on my brother's car. The Senator wanted full control of the Great Lakes shipping routes before the upcoming gubernatorial election."

Evelyn took a small sip of her water. "The Senator is a cautious man, Dominic. He never signs his own orders. He uses three layers of intermediaries, all insulated by non-disclosure agreements and political favors."

"Then we cut through those layers," Dominic said. He turned to face her, leaning his lower back against the window frame. "The Senator is holding his annual political charity gala at the Drake Hotel this Saturday night. Every major figure in Midwest politics, business, and law enforcement will be there."

Evelyn turned her head, looking at him. "Including you?"

"Including us," Dominic corrected. "It's time the Chicago elite met my new fiancée. The woman who resurrected my family."

Evelyn looked down at her hands. "A charity gala... full of the very medical board members who revoked my license two years ago. They will look at me like a disgraced pariah."

Dominic reached out. His large, warm hand gently covered hers, his long fingers wrapping around her glass. The warmth of his skin sent a sudden, pleasant shiver straight down Evelyn’s spine.

"They will look at you," Dominic whispered, his voice deep and velvet-soft, "and they will tremble. Because you are no longer a surgeon tied to their hospital policies, Evelyn. You are the future queen of the Vale organization. Anyone who disrespects you in that ballroom will answer to me."

Evelyn looked up into his dark eyes. For months, she had viewed Dominic Vale as a cold, dangerous mobster—a man forced upon her by circumstance. But looking at him now, seeing the fierce, unyielding protection in his gaze, she felt a wall inside her heart crumble away.

"Dominic..." she murmured, her breath hitching slightly as he stepped closer, closing the distance between them.

"I spent six months believing my life was over when my brother died," Dominic whispered, his free hand rising gently to brush a strand of dark hair away from her face, his thumb softly tracing the healed scratch on her cheek. "I thought I was just surviving to protect Noah. But you brought life back into this house, Evelyn. You saved my nephew. You saved my empire."

"I saved myself," she whispered, though her voice lacked conviction as her eyes fell to his lips.

"Then let me protect you," Dominic murmured.

He leaned down slowly. Evelyn didn't pull away.

When his lips touched hers, it wasn't a brutal, desperate kiss of mobsters and violence. It was slow, intense, and filled with a deep, burning passion that had been building between them since the moment she stood before his gun and saved his nephew’s life.

When he finally pulled back, both of their breaths were shallow.

Dominic looked into her eyes, his thumb resting gently against her jawline.

"Saturday night," Dominic whispered. "We take everything from them."
