Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail in the Shadows

The hum of the hotel vacuum cleaner in the corridor outside Suite 904
was a distant rhythm, but inside Adrian Cole’s room, the silence was deafening.
Adrian stood in the center of the suite, his hands resting on the edge of the mahogany desk. His eyes were fixed on the door where Lucía Herrera had departed only minutes ago with her cleaning cart. On his cheek, he could still feel the phantom touch of eight-month-old Mateo’s tiny, warm fingers.
His desk was cluttered with legal folders, half-empty coffee cups, and private investigator briefs that had accumulated over thirty-six agonizing months. Three years ago, Adrian’s younger sister, Clara Cole, had vanished from a private clinic in Madrid while pregnant. Six months later, her body was found in a wrecked vehicle near the coast. The police ruled it a tragic accident.
Adrian had never believed it.
Clara had been terrified in her final weeks, running from her abusive, powerful ex-fiancé, Julian Vance—a ruthless real estate developer with ties to corrupt city officials. Clara’s body had been identified, but the child she carried was never found. The local authorities concluded the pregnancy had been terminated before the crash.
Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. He pulled out a worn photo of Clara from his wallet. She had the same striking almond-shaped amber eyes, the same tiny dimple on her left cheek, and the exact distinctive curved crescent birthmark behind her right earlobe.
The birthmark.
When Adrian had cradled Mateo in his arms just moments ago, his thumb had brushed past the soft skin behind the baby’s right ear. There, faint but undeniable, was a tiny, crescent-shaped mark.
Adrian’s hands began to shake violently. "Clara..." he whispered, his voice choked with raw emotion. "He’s yours. My God, he’s yours."
He snatched his phone from the desk and dialed a secure satellite line.
"Jonathan," Adrian said the moment the line connected, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of hope and fury. "I need an emergency background check on a woman working at the Grand Luxe Hotel. Name is Lucía Herrera. Housekeeping staff."
On the other end, Jonathan Vance—Adrian’s head of corporate security and most trusted confidant—sounded instantly alert. "Lucía Herrera? Adrian, what's going on? You’ve been locked in that suite for a week."
"She’s carrying a baby in her cart," Adrian said, pacing across the room. "An eight-month-old boy named Mateo. Jonathan, I touched him. He has Clara’s eyes. He has the birthmark."
A sharp intake of breath sounded over the line. "Adrian... Clara died three years ago. The medical examiner—"
"The medical examiner was paid off by Julian Vance!" Adrian roared, slamming his fist onto the desk. "I want Lucía Herrera’s full file in thirty minutes. Where she lives, who her family is, where she gave birth, and how she got a job in this hotel. Do not use standard channels. If Julian finds out I’m tracking a child, Mateo won't survive the night."

"I'm on it," Jonathan replied, his tone shifting into cold, professional urgency. "Stay in the room, Adrian. Don't do anything reckless."
Adrian hung up, staring out the window at the sprawling city skyline. Lucía Herrera was a quiet, hardworking maid, but she was holding the ultimate secret. Was she an innocent victim wrapped up in Julian Vance’s web, or had she been hired to keep Clara’s child hidden forever?
