Chapter 4 - The Interception

Lucía didn't hesitate. She grabbed the handle of the cleaning cart, spun around, and tried to sprint back toward the service elevator.

"Get her!" Mrs. Gable hissed.

One of the men in suits moved with terrifying speed, lunging forward to grab Lucía’s shoulder. Lucía screamed, using her body to shield the cart where Mateo had just woken up, crying in alarm.

Before the man’s hand could touch Lucía, a heavy iron laundry bin smashed into his side with brutal force.

The man crashed into the concrete wall, groaning in pain.

Adrian Cole stepped out from behind the heavy machinery, holding an iron pipe in his hand. His dark tailored suit was immaculate, but his eyes burned with lethal, protective rage. Behind him stood Jonathan Vance and three armed security operatives.

"Touch her again," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register, "and you won't leave this basement on your own feet."

Mrs. Gable gasped, backing away into the folding tables. "Mr. Cole! This is hotel property! This woman brought a black-market child into—"

"Quiet," Adrian commanded, not even looking at her. Jonathan stepped forward, flashing a federal badge and a court seizure order.

"Mrs. Gable, you are under arrest for conspiracy to traffic a minor and accepting bribes from Julian Vance’s shell corporations," Jonathan announced firmly. The security operatives immediately handcuffed Mrs. Gable and the surviving guard.

Lucía collapsed onto her knees beside the cleaning cart, weeping uncontrollably as she pulled Mateo into her arms, pressing him against her chest. "Please... don't take him... please don't take my baby..."

Adrian dropped the iron pipe, the loud clang echoing off the concrete walls. He walked slowly over to Lucía, dropping to his knees on the cold floor right beside her.

"I’m not going to take him, Lucía," Adrian said softly, reaching out a steady hand. He didn't touch Mateo; he simply held his hand open, showing her he was unarmed and gentle. "My name is Adrian Cole. Clara Cole was my younger sister."

Lucía looked up into Adrian’s face through her tears. The amber eyes, the shape of his jaw—it was identical to the dying woman in the back room of the clinic eight months ago.

"You're... you're his uncle?" Lucía whispered, her breath hitching.

"I am," Adrian choked out, tears brimming in his own eyes. "And you... you are the angel who saved my nephew’s life when my sister had no one else."
